Pulp Cthulhu Noir June — The Forgotten Green

Stacy: The numbers are wrong.

Sunlight pours through the diner windows.

Outside, 1958 looks perfect.

Children play.

Cars roll slowly down Main Street.

Gardens bloom.

The town has never looked healthier.

Stacy slides another agricultural report across the table.

Corn yields are soaring.

Fruit harvests have doubled.

Livestock disease has nearly vanished.

Every graph points upward.

Every projection exceeds expectations.

Every expert calls it a miracle.

Caelwyn studies the reports.

Caelwyn: People seem happy.

Stacy looks out the window.

Stacy: Prosperity always looks good at first.

She opens another folder.

Then another.

Then another.

Different counties.

Different decades.

The same pattern appears every time:

  • extraordinary growth
  • record harvests
  • sudden abundance

And then:

  • abandoned farms
  • missing families
  • unexplained disappearances

The room grows quieter.

Outside, summer continues.

Perfect.

Golden.

Alive.

Too alive.

Stacy places an old black-and-white photograph on the table.

An enormous orchard.

Trees overflowing with fruit.

The people beneath them look impossibly small.

Caelwyn studies it.

Caelwyn: Who caused this?

Stacy doesn’t answer immediately.

Finally:

Stacy: That’s what scares me.

A warm breeze enters through the diner door.

The scent of flowers and cut grass drifts inside.

Stacy: If somebody caused it, we could stop it.

Outside, vines climb a telephone pole.

Grass pushes through cracks in the pavement.

Flowers spill across fences.

Tiny things.

Harmless things.

Growing.

Always growing.

Stacy watches the leaves moving in the summer wind.

Stacy: Every civilization believes it understands abundance.

A long silence follows.

Then:

Stacy: Until abundance starts making its own decisions.

The town enjoys the most beautiful summer anyone can remember.

The reports celebrate.

The newspapers celebrate.

The farmers celebrate.

Nobody asks the obvious question:

What happens when growth no longer knows when to stop?

Summer has arrived.

And something old is waking beneath it.
