Mara
Do you think somebody forgot to come?
Chibi
To what?
(The village green is alive with music and laughter. Long tables overflow with bread, fruit, flowers, and summer decorations.)
Mara
The feast.
Chibi
Looks full to me.
Mara
That’s what’s strange.
Chibi
Because it’s full?
Mara
No.
Because it feels like someone is missing.
(A pause.)
Chibi
Who?
Mara
I don’t know.
That’s why it’s strange.
(Music drifts across the green. Villagers raise glasses beneath garlands of leaves and flowers.)
Mara
Everyone seems grateful.
Chibi
For summer.
Mara
That’s not a person.
Chibi
Neither is winter.
Mara
That’s different.
(She points toward the center of the feast.)
A face woven from leaves.
Flowers.
Barley.
Branches.
Watching from above the largest table.
Chibi
The Green Man.
Mara
Yeah.
Chibi
Just decoration.
Mara
Adults always say that.
Chibi
Because it is.
Mara
Then why do they put him in the middle?
(Chibi looks again.)
Chibi
…
Mara
See?
(A warm wind moves through the fields beyond the village.)
Chibi
Maybe people forgot.
Mara
How do you forget something in the middle?
(That is an excellent question.)
Chibi
Adults forget strange things.
Mara
Not that strange.
(Another pause.)
Chibi
You know what’s weird?
Mara
What?
Chibi
Nobody talks about next year.
Mara
What do you mean?
Chibi
Everyone talks about this feast.
This harvest.
This summer.
(He watches the tables.)
Chibi
Nobody talks about where the next one comes from.
(The laughter suddenly feels farther away.)
Mara
That’s exactly what I mean.
Chibi
Maybe it comes from somebody.
Mara
Somebody older.
(The wheat fields bend together in the wind.)
Chibi
Do you think the Green Man is real?
Mara
No.
Chibi
You answered that very quickly.
Mara
Because I don’t think he’s a person.
Chibi
Then what is he?
(She watches the feast.)
Mara
Maybe he’s what happens when people forget somebody.
(Silence.)
Chibi
That’s creepy.
Mara
I know.
(The Green Man smiles above the feast from a face made of things that once lived.)
Chibi
He looks like he’s waiting.
Mara
Yeah.
Chibi
Waiting for what?
(Mara watches the bread. The flowers. The laughter. The gratitude.)
Mara
Maybe his turn.
(A pause.)
Mara
Or ours.
