“The company boss looked like a villain,” Sean says quietly.
“And Ashcroft?” Eljara asks.
Sean watches the professor below.
“Looks like a schoolteacher.”
A worker carrying a lunch tin stops near the fence.
No shift to work.
Still carrying it anyway.
Habit.
“They say he’s saving the world,” the worker says.
Nobody answers.
“They say what’s down there is real.”
“It is,” Eljara replies.
The worker nods.
“My brother disappeared in Tunnel Nine.”
Silence.
“If they blow it up…”
His voice fades.
“Then your brother stays down there,” Sean says quietly.
The worker nods.
Not angry.
Just tired.
Then he asks the real question.
“What happens to everybody else?”
Nobody answers.
Because the answer is standing all around them.
Thousands unemployed.
Shuttered businesses.
Abandoned homes.
A town slowly dying.
“He’s right,” Eljara says quietly.
“Yes.”
“He has to do this.”
“Yes.”
Another pause.
“Then why does this feel wrong?”
Sean watches families gathering near the harbor gate.
Workers.
Children.
Mechanics.
Clerks.
People who never opened the prison.
Then he answers.
“Because the bill never goes to the people who wrote it.”
Below them, Ashcroft signs the final authorization papers.
The whistle sounds.
Demolition crews move into position.
The hero has made his choice.
The correct choice.
The necessary choice.
And somewhere beneath the harbor—
something ancient begins screaming.
The prison knows what is coming.
The final seal.
The final collapse.
The final ending.
Ashcroft turns away from the excavation.
