WHEN THE WORLD EXISTS BETWEEN PEOPLE Delta Green — Mythveil Chronicles Week 4 · May / The Machine

“Then what is real?”

Mara watches the city waking beneath a gray morning sky.

Buses.

Trains.

Workers.

Parents.

Students.

Thousands of strangers moving through routines they barely think about anymore.

The city breathing.

Again.

And again.

Chibi watches the traffic below.

For a long moment he says nothing.

Then:

“The things people keep alive together.”

Mara frowns immediately.

“That can’t be right.”

“Why not?”

“Because they’re real.”

Chibi smiles slightly.

“Exactly.”

Silence.

A train crosses an elevated bridge in the distance.

Hundreds of passengers inside.

Thinking about:

  • work
  • family
  • bills
  • tomorrow

Ordinary things.

Yet somehow together—

they keep something much larger alive.

Not intentionally.

Simply by participating.

A father walks below with his daughter.

The girl laughs.

The father smiles.

For a moment the city feels warm.

Human.

Safe.

“Are they wrong?” Mara asks quietly.

“The people.”

Chibi shakes his head.

“No.”

“But they don’t know.”

“Most don’t.”

“Then how can they be right?”

The wind moves through the bridge railing.

Traffic continues below.

Perfect rhythm.

Perfect continuation.

“Because reality isn’t a test.”

Mara looks at him.

“What does that mean?”

“People think reality is about being correct.”

A pause.

“But mostly it’s about agreement.”

Silence.

The words feel impossible.

And obvious.

At the same time.

Nearby, construction workers repair a damaged section of road.

Fixing something thousands of people will use tomorrow.

Something most will never notice.

“They build things,” Mara says softly.

“Yeah.”

“They fix things.”

“Yeah.”

“Is that the machine?”

Chibi thinks for a moment.

Then nods.

“A little.”

The workers.

The nurses.

The teachers.

The parents.

The commuters.

Everyone carrying a tiny piece.

Not enough to see the whole thing.

But enough to keep it alive.

“Then how do you stop it?” Mara asks.

For the first time—

Chibi hesitates.

Then looks out over the city.

The hospitals.

The schools.

The trains.

The apartment windows.

The fragile human things worth protecting.

And quietly asks:

“Which part?”

Silence.

The city continues moving beneath them.

Alive.

Messy.

Beautiful.

Terrible.

Human.

And suddenly Mara understands.

Reality is not something people discover.

It is something people build together.

Every day.

And tomorrow morning—

they will build it again.
