Nobody uses Platform Six anymore.
Officially.
That’s what the sign says:
LOWER ACCESS CLOSED
STRUCTURAL INSTABILITY
But the elevator still moves.
Sean watches the rusted lift descend slowly beneath the harbor platform.
Chains rattling.
Steam hissing.
Someone is using it.
“That doesn’t sound abandoned,” Sean says quietly.
“No,” Eljara answers.
The corridor smells wrong:
- saltwater
- oil
- wet stone
And beneath all of it—
something old.
A maintenance worker exits a side tunnel carrying tools.
He freezes when he sees them near the elevator.
“You shouldn’t stand here,” he says immediately.
Sean gestures toward the moving lift.
“Thought this level was closed.”
The worker hesitates.
“Parts of it are.”
“Which parts?”
“The unsafe ones.”
The elevator disappears below.
Then:
Three knocks echo upward through the shaft.
Slow.
Heavy.
Metal against stone.
The worker goes pale instantly.
“You heard that before,” Sean says.
“No.”
“You reacted before it happened.”
“No.”
The worker grips his toolbox tighter.
“You people should leave this place alone.”
“You believe the stories,” Eljara says quietly.
“Belief’s got nothing to do with it.”
Steam bursts from a nearby pipe.
Everyone flinches slightly.
Then the loudspeaker crackles overhead:
MAINTENANCE CREW REPORT BELOW IMMEDIATELY
The worker closes his eyes briefly.
Like a man hearing a sentence instead of an order.
“You don’t want to go down there,” Sean says.
“No.”
“Then don’t.”
The worker finally looks directly at him.
“You paying my rent?”
Silence.
“My brother worked Platform Six,” the worker says quietly.
“He disappeared three months ago.”
“And the company?” Eljara asks.
“Said he fell into the water.”
The worker looks toward the far end of the corridor.
There—
half hidden behind steam pipes—
stands a massive red steel door built into ancient carved stone.
Industrial supports surround it.
But the stone itself is much older.
“The old dockworkers used to leave coins there,” the worker says quietly.
“For luck?” Sean asks.
“No.”
A pause.
“So it stayed shut.”
The loudspeaker crackles again:
REPORT BELOW NOW
The worker swallows hard.
Then walks toward the elevator anyway.
“You know this is wrong,” Sean says.
“Yes.”
“Then why keep working?”
The worker stares into the darkness below.
“Because hunger’s scarier when it’s above ground.”
The elevator rises again.
Empty.
Wet footprints cover the floor inside.
Too many.
And none leading out.
The worker steps into the cage anyway.
The elevator descends back into the dark beneath Platform Six.
🜍 THE SHIFT NEVER ENDS — Week 2
The old seals weren’t forgotten.
They were ignored.
Because opening them was profitable.
If old stories still unsettle you —
you already know why.
Some doors were never meant to open.
Some people opened them anyway.
