The map hasn’t changed.
Sean spreads it out.
“The inlet,” he says.
Eljara looks.
“It’s there.”
“It wasn’t.”
“Yes, it was.”
Silence.
Sean taps the paper.
“This line appeared.”
“No.”
“We saw it.”
“No.”
“We talked about it.”
“No.”
Her voice stays calm.
“The ink matches,” she says.
“Yes.”
“The wear matches.”
“Yes.”
“It’s consistent.”
A pause.
“It was always there.”
Sean exhales slowly.
“That’s not what I remember.”
Eljara looks at him.
“That’s not what matters.”
Silence.
Sean gestures toward the door.
“The path.”
“What about it?”
“It split.”
“No.”
“There were two directions.”
“No.”
“There was a choice.”
“No.”
Eljara walks to the doorway.
Looks out.
One path.
Straight.
Unbroken.
“Show me,” she says.
Sean steps beside her.
Points.
“There.”
She looks.
Nothing.
Just one path.
“That’s where it split,” he says.
“No.”
“You were there.”
“Yes.”
“You heard it.”
A pause.
“Yes.”
“And?”
“It didn’t say that.”
The wind dies.
Total stillness.
“What did it say?” Sean asks.
“It told me to stay.”
Silence.
“That’s not what it told me.”
“I know.”
They stand there.
Same place.
Same world.
Different memory.
Sean looks back at the map.
Unchanged.
Certain.
“If I’m wrong,” he says,
“why does it feel like something changed?”
Eljara doesn’t look at him.
“Because something did.”
A pause.
“What?”
She turns slightly.
“Your version.”
The wind returns.
The path remains.
One direction.
Always one.
