WHEN THE ANSWER SHIFTS Delta Green — Mythveil Chronicles Week 1 · Sean & Eljara
“That’s the third time.”
Sean doesn’t slow down.
“I know.”
They keep walking.
A man passes them, phone pressed to his ear.
“…no, that’s not what I meant.”
Pause.
“…that’s not what I meant.”
Eljara glances sideways.
“Same sentence.”
“Yeah.”
Different voice.
Different context.
Same structure.
“They’re correcting themselves,” she says.
“Watch how.”
They reach a crosswalk.
People waiting.
Normal.
The light is still red.
One person steps forward.
Stops.
Steps back again.
No reaction.
Eljara watches the group.
“No one saw that.”
“They felt it was right.”
The light changes.
They cross.
A cyclist slows beside them.
No reason.
No obstacle.
One second.
Then continues.
“That’s timing,” she says.
“Yeah.”
They don’t stop.
Stopping makes patterns clearer.
Another voice behind them:
“…that’s not what I meant.”
Eljara exhales slowly.
“That’s four.”
“Yeah.”
“Different people.”
“Yeah.”
She looks at him.
“That’s not mimicry.”
“No.”
“Mimicry drifts.”
“This holds.”
They reach the other side.
A man stands near a storefront, typing.
Stops.
Deletes.
Types again.
“…that’s not what I meant.”
Sends.
Eljara watches the reflection in the glass.
Same words.
Same structure.
“That’s not coincidence.”
“No.”
They keep moving.
Sean’s gaze shifts constantly now.
Tracking.
Counting.
Pauses.
Adjustments.
Micro-delays.
It’s not synchronized.
That’s the problem.
If it were, it would break.
This doesn’t.
“This feels… clean,” Eljara says.
Sean nods.
“Too clean.”
They stop at another intersection.
A group waits.
One of them speaks.
“…that’s not what I meant.”
No pause.
Just the sentence.
Eljara’s expression tightens slightly.
“That’s new.”
“Yeah.”
“No hesitation.”
Sean watches the man continue.
“It’s getting smoother.”
“Or we’re getting used to it.”
A beat.
He doesn’t answer.
The light changes.
Everyone moves.
Perfect timing.
Sean and Eljara follow a fraction later.
Just enough to feel it.
The difference.
“Sean.”
“Yeah.”
“What if it’s not wrong?”
He looks at her.
“What if it’s just faster?”
He watches the crowd move.
Clean.
Efficient.
Unquestioned.
“That’s worse,” he says.
“Why?”
He looks back at the street.
At the people who no longer hesitate.
“Because then no one checks.”
Behind them, another conversation ends.
Clean.
Final.
Correct.
No pause.
No doubt.
And that’s when it becomes clear.
Nothing is breaking.
Nothing is lying.
Something is just…
answering
before anyone has time to be wrong.
