Chibi:
“They’re doing it again.”

Mara:
“Yes.”

Chibi looks down at the clearing.

“They already know where to stand.”

Mara:
“Yes.”

“They don’t have to think.”

“No.”

A man steps forward.

Not pushed.

Not pulled.

He goes.

Chibi frowns.

“He knows.”

“Yes.”

“And he still does it.”

“Yes.”

A pause.

Chibi:
“That’s wrong.”

Mara shakes her head.

“No.”

“That’s the part that works.”

Silence.

Chibi looks at the ground.

Old marks.

Same place.

“They did it before,” he says.

“Yes.”

“Many times.”

“Yes.”

“They keep it going.”

“Yes.”

A long pause.

Chibi’s voice gets quieter.

“What happens if no one goes?”

Mara answers immediately.

“It stays.”

Chibi looks at her.

“What stays?”

Mara looks past the clearing.

“Everything that shouldn’t.”

Silence.

Chibi nods slowly.

“Yeah,” he says.

“I don’t like that.”

Mara:
“You don’t have to.”

Another pause.

Chibi:
“It still happens.”

Mara nods.

“Yes.”
