🜁 Pulp Cthulhu: By Gaslight When the World Begins to Answer

Caelwyn

Something is wrong with the street.

Stacy

Be specific.

Caelwyn

The distance.

That corner should be closer.

Stacy

Walk.

(They move forward. The corner does not seem to approach as it should.)

Caelwyn

You feel it.

Stacy

Yes.

Caelwyn

It isn’t longer.

Stacy

No.

It only feels that way.

Caelwyn

Which is worse.

(A carriage rolls past. The sound of the wheels echoes slightly too long.)

Stacy

There are additional anomalies.

Caelwyn

Go on.

Stacy

People are reacting too quickly.

Caelwyn

We saw that yesterday.

Stacy

Yesterday it was behavior.

Today it is structure.

Caelwyn

Explain.

Stacy

Two people argue.

The cause is minor.

The reaction is immediate.

No escalation.

No transition.

Emotion jumps directly to intensity.

Caelwyn

As if something removes the space between impulse and action.

Stacy

Exactly.

(Nearby, a woman drops a parcel. The sound is sharp. Her irritation rises instantly, far beyond the situation.)

Caelwyn

There.

Stacy

Yes.

Too fast.

(They stand still as the street continues around them.)

Caelwyn

Week one: the world wakes.

Week two: people lose control.

Stacy

And now—

Caelwyn

Now the world is using it.

Stacy

No.

The world is responding.

Caelwyn

To what?

Stacy

To pattern.

Caelwyn

Pattern?

Stacy

Enough people feeling the same thing.

At the same time.

Instinct.

Impulse.

Emotional acceleration.

Caelwyn

And that creates—

Stacy

Coherence.

Caelwyn

And coherence creates—

Stacy

Resonance.

(A pause. The fog shifts slightly between the gas lamps.)

Caelwyn

Then this isn’t random.

Stacy

No.

Caelwyn

It’s feedback.

Stacy

Yes.

Caelwyn

Between us…

Stacy

…and the environment.

(They both look down the street again. For a moment, the distance feels wrong. Then it settles.)

Caelwyn

So we are not observing instability.

Stacy

No.

Caelwyn

We are observing adjustment.

Stacy

Exactly.

Caelwyn

To us.

Stacy

To what we are becoming.

(A long silence.)

Caelwyn

Then the problem is not loss of control.

Stacy

No.

Caelwyn

It’s scale.

Stacy

Yes.

Too many people.

Feeling the same thing.

At the same time.

Caelwyn

And the world—

Stacy

—begins to answer.
