The town is getting ready.
Paper banners.
Painted smiles.
Permission wrapped in color.
Sean stops in front of the pharmacy window.
Masks hang from strings, turning slowly in the warm air.
Eljara:
They always look harmless like this.
Sean nods.
Sean:
That’s the point.
A teenager passes them, hood pulled low.
Nothing illegal. Nothing wrong.
Still, eyes follow him.
Eljara:
They’re not scared of what people do.
Sean:
They’re scared of not knowing who someone is.
The poster on the community hall flaps in the wind:
Family Friendly Masquerade.
Someone crossed out the word once.
Then wrote it back in cleaner letters.
Eljara:
Masks interrupt the story.
Sean smiles, thin and tired.
Sean:
And when people lose the story, they look for someone to blame.
A police cruiser rolls by. Slow. Watching.
Eljara:
So the mask becomes the crime.
Sean:
No.
He looks down the street.
Sean:
The refusal to be legible does.
They stand there as dusk settles in.
Behind them, the town practices smiling.
Ahead, the night doesn’t bother with a costume.
