Stacy keeps her jacket on.
The room is warm.
The heater hums.
Still, she doesn’t take it off.
Caelwyn:
You’re not cold.
Stacy:
No.
She turns a page she’s already read.
Caelwyn:
Then why keep it?
She thinks before answering.
Stacy:
Because it’s part of how I’m standing here.
Caelwyn nods.
Caelwyn:
A layer.
Stacy:
A boundary.
Outside, the town prepares for carnival.
Paper masks in shop windows.
Smiles painted too wide to trust.
Caelwyn:
People think masks are lies.
Stacy finally looks up.
Stacy:
No.
They’re interfaces.
She closes her notebook.
Stacy:
The danger isn’t wearing one.
It’s forgetting why you started.
A child runs past the window, plastic mask slipping sideways.
For a second, a real face shows.
Then it’s pulled straight again.
Caelwyn:
Carnival ends.
Stacy:
But the need doesn’t.
They stand there, watching the town get ready to pretend.
Inside, something quieter has already begun.
