The Cost of Acting Carefully (Delta Green)

A short exchange between Sean & Eljara — Week 3

Eljara:
This doesn’t feel like an operation.

Sean:
Good.
Operations attract meaning.

Eljara:
So we’re lying now.

Sean:
We’re containing without announcing it.

Eljara:
That’s still lying.

Sean:
Yes.
But it’s quieter.

(They watch people leave the building without protest.)

Eljara:
They don’t understand what just happened.

Sean:
Understanding invites synchronization.

Eljara:
God, I hate that sentence.

Sean:
Me too.
That’s how I know it’s true.

Eljara:
Caelwyn’s rules said continuity over correction.

Sean:
And that’s what this is.

Eljara:
It feels like postponement.

Sean:
It is.

Eljara:
So what did we actually solve?

Sean:
Nothing.

Eljara:
Then why does this feel worse than doing nothing?

Sean:
Because doing nothing feels honest.
This feels responsible.

(A pause.)

Eljara:
You don’t believe these rules will hold.

Sean:
I believe they’ll fail slower.

Eljara:
And slower means safer?

Sean:
No.
It means the damage spreads out enough that people keep functioning.

Eljara:
That’s not comforting.

Sean:
It’s survival.

Eljara:
At what cost?

Sean:
Trust.
Clarity.
The illusion that we had a clean choice.

(A streetlight flickers.)

Eljara:
Do you feel it adjusting?

Sean:
Yeah.

Eljara:
Like pressure changing shape.

Sean:
Pressure always finds a seam.

Eljara:
So next week—

Sean:
—we won’t get to be careful anymore.

(They walk on.)

Because the worst damage isn’t sudden.
It’s managed.
