How to Keep Time from Hurting (Delta Green)

Mara & Chibi — Week 3 (Shortform)

Mara:
It feels later than it should be.

Chibi:
Not by the clock.
By feeling.

Mara:
Are we allowed to do this?

Chibi:
Allowed by who?

Mara:
The year.

Chibi:
The year doesn’t make rules.
It just keeps score.

(They stretch a string between two chair legs.)

Mara:
What is this?

Chibi:
A line.

Mara:
For what?

Chibi:
So we remember where we are.

Mara:
Sean says lines are dangerous.

Chibi:
Big ones are.
Small ones are anchors.

Mara:
Is this a ritual?

Chibi:
Don’t call it that.

Mara:
Why?

Chibi:
Because then it starts wanting things.

(The clock ticks somewhere else.)

Mara:
Will this stop it?

Chibi:
No.

Mara:
Then why do it?

Chibi:
So it doesn’t hurt as much.

Mara:
That sounds like what Stacy said.

Chibi:
She’s smart.
Just loud about it.

(The light flickers once.)

Mara:
Did you feel that?

Chibi:
Yeah.

Mara:
Did it work?

(Nothing moves.)

Chibi:
It helped.

Mara:
So this is how we keep going.

Chibi:
Yeah.
Slow.
On purpose.

(They don’t untie the string.)
