Repairs.

The belief wasn’t that spirits punish you.
It was that order collapses if you insist on maintaining it.

During the Rauhnächte,
time is considered suspended.

To work as if it isn’t
was treated as interference.

Records describe what followed in neutral terms:

Projects fail months later.
Cloth rots in storage.
Repairs undo themselves.

Hands lose precision.
Memory slips.

No single disaster.
Just cumulative error.

So households did the opposite of preparation.

They left things incomplete — deliberately.
They accepted disorder — temporarily.
They documented what was left undone.

Because the danger wasn’t chaos.

The danger was pretending
that control still applied.

This night wasn’t about fear.

It was about restraint.
