They stand below the castle walls
as dusk tightens its grip on Edinburgh.
Above them, Edinburgh Castle rises like a scar in the sky —
stone layered with centuries of command, punishment, applause, and silence.
Below it, the city holds its breath.
The Royal Mile is already closing its eyes.
Shops shutter.
Footsteps thin.
But the stones remain awake.
Stacy checks the program first.
“Military Tattoo,” she says quietly.
“Precision. Ceremony. Memory turned into rhythm.”
Caelwyn doesn’t look at the banners.
He listens.
The first drumbeat rolls across the esplanade —
not loud,
but exact.
Measured like a heartbeat trained to obey.
“These aren’t performances,” he says.
“They’re repetitions.”
The pipes answer.
A sound too sharp for comfort,
too old to be decoration.
It climbs the castle walls and comes back changed.
Stacy watches the formations below —
lines of bodies moving as one,
faces forward,
eyes empty of doubt.
“Every empire does this,” she murmurs.
“Turn loss into music.
Turn ghosts into pageantry.”
Another drumbeat.
Then another.
Caelwyn closes his eyes.
Beneath the applause,
beneath the flags,
beneath the clean boots and polished brass —
something else marches.
Not soldiers.
Memories.
Orders that never ended.
Children who learned cadence before language.
Men who never came home but never fully left.
“This city doesn’t celebrate war,” Caelwyn says.
“It rehearses it.
So it doesn’t forget how.”
The final note hangs too long in the air.
For a moment, the crowd is silent —
not moved,
not proud,
but held.
Then applause breaks the spell.
Stacy exhales.
“No anomaly,” she says.
She pauses.
“…Just resonance.”
Behind them, high on the castle rock,
the stone does not applaud.
