The knife meets resistance — the way good things should.
“This is travel food,” she grins.
“Monks. Soldiers. Shepherds.
People who didn’t know if tomorrow would be kind.”
They eat without ceremony.
Oatcake.
Cheese.
A slow swallow of cider — sharp, apple-bright, warming on the way down.
Outside, the wind presses against the walls.
Inside, the fire answers.
“This lasts,” Sean says quietly.
“Doesn’t spoil. Doesn’t rush you.
You can carry it for days.”
Eljara nods.
“And it tastes like staying.”
No plates.
No table.
Just hands, firelight, and something simple that holds together.
