legs crossed,
neon light bleeding through the blinds like rain that forgot how to fall.

Around him:
data slates,
crime photos,
a city map of Los Angeles, 2037 —
creased, annotated, breathing with memory.

In his hands lies a case file.
Thick. Official. Cold.

Mara frowns.
“Chibi… why does that file feel… heavy?”

Chibi doesn’t look up.
“Because it remembers,” he says.
“Every choice someone didn’t want to make.”

The file opens by itself.

Crime scene photos flicker to life —
rain-soaked streets,
synthetic blood,
eyes staring past the camera as if something important was just deleted.

A timeline scrolls.
Then stutters.
Then rewrites itself.

Mara leans closer.
“I don’t see a monster.”

Chibi nods.
“Exactly. This isn’t about what they did.”
He swallows.
“It’s about why you’re ordered to care.”

The city map pulses.
Districts light up and go dark again —
as if Los Angeles is breathing,
measuring who matters tonight.

A question types itself across the screen:

WHAT DOES IT COST
TO REMAIN HUMAN?

The lights flicker.
The file locks.

Somewhere outside,
a siren wails —
not as a warning,
but as a reminder.

Mara whispers,
“Do we solve it?”

Chibi closes the case.
“No,” he says.
“We live with it.”
