❓ If winter handed you a piece of the sky — would you taste it?
Eljara swears the first time she saw them,
she thought someone had stolen clouds
and hidden them on a silver plate.
Meringues.
Not the brittle kind from corner bakeries —
but the Neuchâtel ones,
soft as breath,
crisp as frost,
sweet enough to make Mara gasp after the first bite.
Sean brings out the double cream
— Doppelrahm, so thick it barely moves —
and sets it beside the bowl.
“Eljara,” he says,
“this is the part where you behave.”
She does not behave.
She plunges the spoon into the cream
like she’s digging for gold,
drops a mountain of it onto the warm meringue,
and lets it melt into the cracks
like sunlight sinking into snow.
Mara watches, wide-eyed.
“It looks alive.”
Eljara grins.
“Oh, it is.
Food that remembers winter
and forgives it.”
They eat by the window,
snow falling sideways,
the world quiet enough to hear the spoon scrape
and the soft sigh Mara makes
when the cream hits her tongue.
Outside, the Jura winds rise —
the same winds that carved Creux du Van
into a stone cathedral.
Inside, sweetness thickens the air.
And for a moment,
the winter feels warm.
❓ If a dessert could repair a day —
would you keep it for yourself,
or share the cloud?
