❓ If the wind carved your name into the cliffs… would you answer it?
They reach the plateau just as the sun collapses behind the Jura.
Creux du Van rises before them —
a colossal stone amphitheater,
a bowl carved not by nature
but by something with a steady hand
and a long memory.
The cold here is different.
Not harsh.
Not cruel.
Just aware.
Stacy adjusts her scanner.
The device hums,
then shifts to a low, almost embarrassed whine.
“Wind signatures aren’t supposed to repeat,” she mutters.
“But something is… echoing itself.”
Caelwyn steps to the edge.
The wind curls upward,
warm for a moment —
as if greeting him
by mistake.
Below, the cirque stretches into a silence
so deep it feels like a held breath.
A stone nearby vibrates.
Not from footsteps,
not from weather —
from recognition.
Stacy kneels beside a patch of frost.
Patterns spiral outward in perfect geometry:
six, pause, two, pause, six—
too deliberate for ice.
“Caelwyn,” she says quietly,
“the wind’s not moving around the cliffs.”
She shows him the screen.
“It’s moving through them.”
He touches the rock.
It’s warm.
Briefly.
Then a whisper rises from the bowl below —
a long note,
like a name stretched thin by centuries.
The cliffs answer themselves.
An echo not delayed,
but corrected.
Something in the vast stone circle
turns its attention toward them.
Slow.
Patient.
Listening.
Stacy steps back.
“Creux du Van doesn’t watch the weather…”
Her voice drops.
“…the weather watches us.”
The wind rises again.
This time,
it shapes a sound that isn’t quite a word —
but almost becomes one.
A name.
Half-forgotten.
Almost theirs.
❓ If the cliffs called you by name…
would you call back,
or hope the wind forgets you?
