🜍 Eljara & Sean — “Totenbeinli: Biscuits for the Living… and the Remembered”
❓ If a sweet tasted like someone calling your name from the past… would you still take the second bite?
Sean finds the Totenbeinli first—
a small bag tied with red twine,
left on a wooden bench outside the old hospice
as if someone stepped away only a moment ago.
Eljara lifts one gently.
Hard, pale, dusted with sugar—
a bone-shaped biscuit meant for winter nights
and for those wandering souls
the season refuses to forget.
“It’s an offering,” she murmurs.
“Or a reminder.”
Sean tries one.
It cracks loudly between his teeth—
louder than a biscuit should.
The taste is almond, citrus…
and something older, like warm bread in a house
that no longer stands.
A breeze curls around them.
Not cold.
Not warm.
Just… present.
Eljara freezes, eyes narrowing toward the hospice windows.
“Someone’s watching.”
Sean swallows.
“Not someone,” he says softly.
“Something.”
A shadow shifts behind the frosted glass—
slow, deliberate,
as if deciding whether they are worthy
of sharing the dead’s winter bread.
The bag on the bench rustles.
Another biscuit settles on its side.
No hands.
No wind.
A count.
Or a warning.
Sean exhales through his teeth.
“Eljara… do we finish them,
or put them back?”
She holds the Totenbeinli in her palm,
feeling the weight of it—
far too heavy for flour and sugar.
“It’s rude not to accept a gift,” she says.
“But it’s dangerous to accept the wrong one.”
