He just stands near the old wooden table in the mountain hut,
hands wrapped around a mug,
steam rising like soft ghosts from his breath.
Behind him, the storm presses against the windows—
but inside, the world is warm.
Mara sits cross-legged on the bench,
trying to balance a cinnamon star on Chibi’s head.
He pretends it’s a divine crown
and immediately demands tribute.
Stacy hangs tiny paper charms over the lanterns,
checking each knot twice,
her mind already mapping the night outside
in case anything old decides to knock.
Eljara stirs a pot on the stove,
red ponytail swaying,
muttering a spell under her breath
that sounds suspiciously like a recipe
and a threat at the same time.
Caelwyn sharpens his axe by the hearth,
sparks flickering like fireflies—
yet his eyes soften every time he glances
at the children trying to balance cookies on each other.
Sean watches them.
All of them.
And then—
just for a heartbeat—
he closes his eyes.
Because he remembers when winter nights were different.
When silence wasn’t peace
but punishment.
When fire was something you sat beside
because no one sat beside you.
Not tonight.
He opens his eyes,
lets the warmth hit him again,
and sighs—
that low, tired sound
you make only when the world finally
lets you breathe.
He thinks:
Let this last.
Just a little longer.
Let me stay a while yet.
No one hears it.
But the candle closest to him burns brighter—
as if something did.
