You notice it only because the cold arrives too quietly.
The snow doesn’t fall —
it tightens,
curling inward as if the night is holding its breath
waiting
for you to make a mistake.
Your footsteps sink without a sound.
Your breath freezes wrong in the air,
hanging too still,
as if someone unseen is weighing it in their hand
to judge it.
And then you see her.
Not a shadow.
Not a ghost.
A white mask gliding over the snow,
smooth as an eggshell,
the mouth a painted black slit
that widens
when she stops.
No breath.
No movement.
Just listening.
Perchta —
the Bright One, the Hidden One,
Queen of the Twelve Nights.
She tilts her head,
and the fog folds toward her
as if the darkness itself wants to kneel.
A whisper threads into your ear,
cold enough to burn:
“Did you finish what you were meant to finish…
or must I open you
to see the truth myself?”
Something shifts under your ribs —
every undone chore,
every broken promise,
every lie you meant to bury
suddenly sharp enough to cut you from the inside.
You step back.
The snow behind you collapses
as if something large just moved out of the way.
Her mask tilts again.
Waiting.
Choosing.
They say Perchta walks the threshold
on the nights between the years,
seeking the one
whose truth rings hollow.
And now she knows your name.
You are not dying.
You’re being inspected.
