Bachlkoch — Food for the Percht

🜍 “Bachlkoch — Food for the Percht”

Sean & Eljara

The old Alpine kitchens always smelled of flour and milk in winter —
thin, simple things,
the kind you cook when the dark is watching
and you want to show it you haven’t forgotten the rules.

Sean stirs the pot slowly.
The mixture thickens into pale, steaming Bachlkoch,
soft as snow,
sweet enough to feel like someone’s childhood,
but humble enough to feed a goddess who doesn’t like pride.

Eljara leans over the stove, curious:
“So… this is what you give the Percht?”

Sean doesn’t smile.
Not tonight.
“Not give,” he murmurs.
“Leave.”

Eljara tilts her head.
“For her?”

“For whatever walks with her,” Sean corrects.
“They say she comes through the Raunächte
checking who kept their house in order…
and who wasted what winter offered.”

He pours the Bachlkoch onto a wooden board,
dips a spoon into sugar,
lets it fall like frost.

The kitchen grows still.
The flame doesn’t flicker.
The air feels… expectant.

Eljara whispers:
“Sean… why does this feel like we’re being watched?”

Sean’s eyes move to the window,
where frost has formed the outline
of a face that isn’t hers,
isn’t his,
and isn’t staying long.

“She knows every home,” he says softly.
“And she remembers who leaves their bowl outside
and who forgets.”

A soft knock echoes through the wall.
Not at the door.
Inside the wood.

Eljara sets the bowl down gently.
“Should we… open it?”

Sean shakes his head.
“No.
You never greet the Percht.”

❓ If winter demanded an offering from your table…
would you prepare it, or hope she doesn’t check your door tonight?
