The snow outside beats against the windows
like someone trying to get in.
Inside, Caelwyn sits at a too-small wooden table,
coat unbuttoned, hair glowing in candlelight,
phone in his rough hands.
Amazon is open.
And absolutely nothing helps.
He types:
“Meaningful gifts for impossible people.”
Deletes it.
Tries again:
“Last-minute miracles.”
Deletes it faster.
Finally:
“What do you buy for someone who saved your life?”
Behind him, the Gang is loud in the way families are.
Stacy passes, glances at the screen,
and says softly,
“That won’t tell you what you’re really asking.”
Eljara laughs under her breath.
Chibi shouts from the corner,
“Buy ME something expensive!”
Mara holds up a crooked paper star:
“I made mine already!”
Caelwyn exhales so deeply
the candle flickers like a sigh agreeing with him.
He turns the phone off.
Silence settles.
He looks at them.
All of them.
The chaos-child.
The dreamer.
The healer.
The old wolf with the soft heart.
And something in his chest
that’s been heavy for years
finally shifts.
He thinks:
“Love.
Loyalty.
Friendship.
That’s worth more
than anything I could ever wrap.”
The snowstorm softens outside.
And Caelwyn smiles —
quiet, rare, real.
