Vienna’s Zentralfriedhof is colder than the rest of the city —
a disciplined cold,
the kind that waits politely
until you’re deep enough inside
that you can’t change your mind.
Caelwyn and Stacy push through the iron gate,
its hinges groaning like an old prayer.
Snow drifts across rows of graves
older than the streetlights behind them.
Stacy stops first.
Her breath hangs in front of her
—not drifting,
but rising,
as if something warm beneath the stones
is pushing the air upward.
Stacy:
“Did you feel that?”
Caelwyn lifts the lantern.
The light bends forward,
as though drawn toward a particular path
between two mausoleums.
A soft noise rolls through the cemetery.
Not wind.
Not footsteps.
A sigh.
Long.
Measured.
As if the ground itself were exhaling
after holding its breath too long.
They follow the sound.
A small chapel stands half-buried in snow,
its cross tilted,
its windows glowing with a faint amber light
that flickers without rhythm.
Stacy brushes snow off a stone slab.
A name.
A date.
Scratched recently —
far too recently
for the grave beneath it.
Stacy:
“Someone visited last night.”
Caelwyn:
“Or left.”
The hum deepens under their boots.
Candles inside the chapel flare all at once,
though no door opens
and no wind touches the flames.
One candle bends sideways,
its flame pointing straight at them
like a finger.
Stacy whispers:
“Don’t go closer…
unless you want it to remember your face.”
A final breath escapes the earth —
warm, like someone whispering from below.
They step back.
The light inside the chapel goes out.
All at once.
