The bakery was already closed when Sean pushed the door open
with the slow confidence of a man
who has outlived stranger nights than this one.

 

Inside, the air was warm —
too warm for a winter evening.
Eljara stepped in behind him, nose wrinkling.

“It smells like bread,” she whispered,
“and something… watching.”

On the counter sat a single loaf.
Dark crust.
Cross carved deep.
Steam rising in slow, unnatural curls.

Nachtsegenbrot.

 

Night-Blessing Bread.
A tradition older than every church wall in Vienna:
You leave a piece on the window
so the wandering dead won’t knock.
So they eat,
and leave you breathing.

Sean touched the crust with two fingers.
It pulsed.
Like a heart that remembered warmth.

“That’s fresh,” he muttered,

 

“but no baker made this tonight.”

A cold draft rolled through the shop.
Eljara shivered.
The ovens were cold.
The kneading table dusty.
Every tool untouched.

But the loaf was warm.
Alive warm.

A shape moved behind the flour sacks —
too thin, too tall, leaning just so
that it didn’t need eyes to see them.

Eljara grabbed Sean’s sleeve.
“Don’t eat it.”

 

Sean nodded.
“Not tonight.”

They backed toward the door,
the loaf still steaming,
still pulsing,
still waiting for someone who needed it
more than the living do.
