THE MIND THAT WAS NEVER HUMAN

Cosmere · Spooky October · Week 4 · Shortform 1
Stacy & Caelwyn · Roshar · Cryptics · Beyond the Veil

Stacy and Caelwyn examining a shifting geometric Cryptic spren on the wall of a Rosharan wayhouse.

What happens when something understands our words but has never shared our lives? Stonewalkers — The Lost Honorblade of Roshar

English · Deutsch · Italiano · Español

STACY:
“Caelwyn, there’s something moving on the wall.”

CAELWYN:
“It’s an old building. Things move.”

STACY:
“The stones aren’t moving. The pattern is.”

Black lines twisted across the stone, folding into geometries that should have been impossible.

Then the pattern spoke.

CRYPTIC:
“Why are you holding a sword?”

CAELWYN:
“Because I don’t trust things that speak from walls.”

CRYPTIC:
“The sword cannot harm me.”

CAELWYN:
“That doesn’t mean I have to like you.”

CRYPTIC:
“Interesting.”

Stacy stepped forward.

STACY:
“Are you a spren?”

CRYPTIC:
“A Cryptic.”

CAELWYN:
“A liespren.”

The lines tightened.

CRYPTIC:
“That description is inaccurate.”

CAELWYN:
“I thought you might say that.”

Outside, a highstorm was approaching.

Inside the wayhouse, frightened travellers waited for their families.

A little boy held his mother’s hand.

BOY:
“Will Father come home before the storm?”

MOTHER:
“Of course he will.”

The pattern stopped moving.

CRYPTIC:
“That statement is unsupported.”

The boy stared at the wall.

BOY:
“Mother?”

CRYPTIC:
“His father may not return.”

The child began to cry.

Caelwyn stepped towards the Cryptic.

CAELWYN:
“Enough.”

CRYPTIC:
“I stated a possibility.”

CAELWYN:
“And frightened a child.”

CRYPTIC:
“His fear does not change the probability.”

Stacy raised her hand.

STACY:
“Do you understand why she told him that?”

CRYPTIC:
“She wishes him to believe something she cannot establish as true.”

STACY:
“She wants him to feel safe.”

CRYPTIC:
“Safety is not created by inaccurate statements.”

STACY:
“No. But comfort can be.”

The Cryptic fell silent.

CRYPTIC:
“Then humans value something other than truth.”

STACY:
“We value truth. But we also care what happens to the person hearing it.”

On Roshar, the supernatural is not confined to ghosts, omens or the souls of the dead.

Beyond the Physical Realm lies the Cognitive Realm, where thought and perception possess their own reality.

And some of its inhabitants were never human.

Cryptics are intelligent spren, fascinated by patterns, truths and the contradictions of human behaviour.

They can speak.

They can reason.

They can learn.

But understanding our words does not automatically mean understanding our lives.

The same problem appears throughout humanity’s encounters with imagined angels, demons and otherworldly intelligences.

What happens when something understands exactly what we say, but not why it matters?

A violent crack echoed through the wayhouse.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

The Cryptic spread across the wall.

CRYPTIC:
“The structure is failing.”

CAELWYN:
“Everyone into the cellar! Now!”

The boy refused to move.

BOY:
“But Father will come! Mother promised!”

Stacy knelt beside him.

STACY:
“We don’t know when he’ll return.”

BOY:
“But—”

STACY:
“What we do know is that your mother is here. And she’s coming with you.”

His mother reached for his hand.

MOTHER:
“Every step.”

He followed her.

The roof collapsed moments after the last traveller reached the cellar.

Hours later, the storm began to weaken.

CRYPTIC:
“My warning was truthful.”

STACY:
“Yes. And it saved us.”

CRYPTIC:
“Then truth is always beneficial.”

STACY:
“Not necessarily. Imagine telling that boy his father was dead while the roof was falling.”

CRYPTIC:
“But we do not know whether his father is dead.”

STACY:
“Exactly. And even if we knew, would that have been the moment to tell him?”

The lines moved more slowly.

CRYPTIC:
“Such information might have prevented him from escaping.”

STACY:
“Now you’re beginning to understand.”

CRYPTIC:
“Truth and goodness are separate properties.”

CAELWYN:
“That’s rather well put.”

CRYPTIC:
“You are very strange creatures.”

CAELWYN:
“You’re speaking from a wall.”

By dawn, the boy’s father returned.

His mother cried with relief.

The Cryptic watched the family embrace.

CRYPTIC:
“Her prediction was correct.”

STACY:
“Yes.”

CRYPTIC:
“But she could not have known.”

STACY:
“No.”

CRYPTIC:
“Then she was wrong to promise.”

Stacy considered her answer.

STACY:
“Perhaps. But she wasn’t wrong to hope.”

The pattern unfolded.

CRYPTIC:
“I do not wish to become human.”

STACY:
“Why should you?”

CRYPTIC:
“But I would like to understand why you matter to one another.”

Stacy smiled.

STACY:
“Then perhaps we should begin by learning what matters to you.”

For the first time, the Cryptic had no immediate answer.

We often imagine otherworldly beings through human categories.

Angels must be good.

Demons must be evil.

Strange appearances must conceal strange intentions.

But a nonhuman intelligence does not have to be cruel to frighten us.

It may simply understand reality differently.

And greater knowledge does not necessarily mean greater wisdom.

The most unsettling thing beyond the veil may not be a creature that hates humanity.

It may be a mind that has never needed to understand us at all.

DER GEIST, DER NIEMALS MENSCHLICH WAR

Cosmere · Spooky October · Week 4 · Shortform 1

LA MENTE CHE NON È MAI STATA UMANA

Cosmere · Spooky October · Week 4 · Shortform 1

CRYPTIC:
«La spada non può ferirmi.»

CAELWYN:
«Questo non significa che debba volerti bene.»

CRYPTIC:
«Interessante.»

Stacy si avvicinò.

STACY:
«Sei uno spren?»

CRYPTIC:
«Un Cryptic.»

CAELWYN:
«Un liespren.»

Le linee si contrassero.

CRYPTIC:
«Questa definizione è inesatta.»

CAELWYN:
«Immaginavo che l’avresti detto.»

Fuori si avvicinava un’alta tempesta.

All’interno della locanda, alcuni viaggiatori spaventati aspettavano i loro familiari.

Un bambino teneva la mano della madre.

BAMBINO:
«Papà tornerà a casa prima della tempesta?»

MADRE:
«Ma certo che tornerà.»

Il disegno smise di muoversi.

CRYPTIC:
«Questa affermazione non è supportata da prove.»

Il bambino fissò la parete.

BAMBINO:
«Mamma?»

CRYPTIC:
«Suo padre potrebbe non tornare.»

Il bambino cominciò a piangere.

Caelwyn fece un passo verso il Cryptic.

CAELWYN:
«Basta.»

CRYPTIC:
«Ho espresso una possibilità.»

CAELWYN:
«E hai spaventato un bambino.»

CRYPTIC:
«La sua paura non modifica la probabilità.»

Stacy alzò una mano.

STACY:

STACY:
«Vuole farlo sentire al sicuro.»

CRYPTIC:
«La sicurezza non nasce da affermazioni inesatte.»

STACY:
«No. Ma il conforto sì, a volte.»

Il Cryptic tacque.

CRYPTIC:

CRYPTIC:
«La struttura dell’edificio sta cedendo.»

CAELWYN:
«Tutti in cantina! Subito!»

Il bambino si rifiutò di muoversi.

BAMBINO:
«Ma papà arriverà! Mamma l’ha promesso!»

Stacy si inginocchiò davanti a lui.

STACY:
«Non sappiamo quando tornerà.»

BAMBINO:
«Ma…»

STACY:
«Quello che sappiamo è che tua madre è qui. E verrà con te.»

Sua madre gli tese la mano.

MADRE:
«A ogni passo.»

STACY:
«Adesso cominci a capire.»

CRYPTIC:
«Verità e bontà sono proprietà distinte.»

CAELWYN:
«Detto piuttosto bene.»

CRYPTIC:
«Siete creature molto strane.»

CAELWYN:
«Tu parli da una parete.»

All’alba, il padre del bambino tornò.

Sua madre pianse di sollievo.

Il Cryptic osservò la famiglia abbracciarsi.

CRYPTIC:
«La sua previsione era corretta.»

STACY:
«Sì.»

CRYPTIC:
«Ma non poteva saperlo.»

STACY:
«No.»

CRYPTIC:
«Allora ha sbagliato a prometterlo.»

Stacy rifletté.

STACY:
«Forse. Ma non ha sbagliato a sperarlo.»

Il disegno si dispiegò.

CRYPTIC:
«Non desidero diventare umano.»

STACY:
«E perché dovresti?»

CRYPTIC:

Cosmere · Spooky October · Week 4 · Shortform 1

MADRE:
«Claro que volverá.»

El dibujo dejó de moverse.

CRYPTIC:
«Esa afirmación carece de pruebas.»

El niño miró fijamente la pared.

NIÑO:
«¿Mamá?»

CRYPTIC:
«Su padre podría no regresar.»

El niño comenzó a llorar.

Caelwyn se acercó al Cryptic.

CAELWYN:
«Basta.»

CRYPTIC:
«He expresado una posibilidad.»

CAELWYN:
«Y has asustado a un niño.»

CRYPTIC:
«Su miedo no modifica la probabilidad.»

Stacy levantó una mano.

STACY:

STACY:
«No. Pero a veces el consuelo sí.»

El Cryptic guardó silencio.

CRYPTIC:

CRYPTIC:
«La estructura del edificio está fallando.»

CAELWYN:
«¡Todos al sótano! ¡Ahora!»

El niño se negó a moverse.

NIÑO:
«¡Pero papá va a venir! ¡Mamá lo ha prometido!»

Stacy se arrodilló delante de él.

STACY:
«No sabemos cuándo volverá.»

NIÑO:
«Pero…»

STACY:

CRYPTIC:
«Mi advertencia era verdadera.»

STACY:
«Sí. Y nos ha salvado.»

CRYPTIC:
«Entonces la verdad siempre es beneficiosa.»

STACY:
«No necesariamente.

CRYPTIC:
«Esa información podría haberle impedido escapar.»

STACY:
«Ahora empiezas a entender.»

CRYPTIC:

CRYPTIC:
«Su predicción era correcta.»

STACY:
«Sí.»

CRYPTIC:
«Pero no podía saberlo.»

STACY:
«No.»

CRYPTIC:
«Entonces se equivocó al prometerlo.»

Stacy se quedó pensativa.

STACY:
«Quizá. Pero no se equivocó al tener esperanza.»

El dibujo se desplegó.

CRYPTIC:
«No deseo convertirme en humano.»

STACY:
«¿Y por qué ibas a hacerlo?»

CRYPTIC:
