The howling at the Caern has faded.
Inside the meeting house, bowls pass along crowded tables. Someone is telling a story. Judging by the interruptions, several people remember it differently.
Sean and Eljara watch from the covered side porch. They have not joined the rites.
SEAN:
“Nobody sits there.”
ELJARA:
“Perhaps the chair is uncomfortable.”
SEAN:
“Clean spoon. Folded cloth. Everyone else is squeezed onto benches.”
ELJARA:
“Then it’s empty. Not available.”
Inside, a young man reaches for the chair.
The older man carrying the bread shakes his head and points towards another bench.
SEAN:
“Someone important.”
ELJARA:
“Or someone dead.”
Sean looks at her.
ELJARA:
“You thought of rank. I thought of remembrance. We could both be wrong.”
The storyteller spreads his arms wide.
Somebody at the other end of the table holds two fingers a short distance apart.
Laughter fills the room.
SEAN:
“Whatever he fought is getting larger.”
ELJARA:
“Then it’s fortunate there were witnesses.”
—
The older man places a covered bowl beside the stove.
Sean notices.
SEAN:
“He’s keeping something warm.”
ELJARA:
“That complicates your theory about an honoured ancestor.”
SEAN:
“Your theory.”
ELJARA:
“I said we could be wrong.”
Sean leans against the railing.
SEAN:
“Earlier, they gave Gnosis to replenish the Caern through the Moot Rite.” [1]
ELJARA:
“And now you’re watching a bowl of stew.”
SEAN:
“I’m wondering where one kind of care ends and the other begins.”
ELJARA:
“The stew doesn’t replace the rite.”
SEAN:
“No. But someone has remembered that the people who sustain the place also need sustaining.”
Inside, the older man bends to wipe a spill beneath a bench.
Nobody stops talking.
SEAN:
“It was impossible not to notice whoever led the howl.”
ELJARA:
“The person cleaning the floor is easier to miss.”
SEAN:
“He hasn’t sat down yet.”
ELJARA:
“No.”
Sean watches him straighten his back.
SEAN:
“Then that’s another place we should be watching.”
—
A broad-shouldered young man puts down his spoon.
His bowl is still half full.
He says something to his neighbour, takes a coat from a peg and leaves through the rear door.
SEAN:
“He’s missing the end of the story.”
ELJARA:
“Perhaps that’s why he left.”
But Sean keeps watching.
A light moves between the trees.
Then a young woman emerges from the woodland path, her coat dark with rain. The young man meets her beneath the far eaves.
A small radio changes hands.
She points back towards the trees. He nods and takes the path she has just left.
SEAN:
“She was keeping watch.”
ELJARA:
“And he’s taking over.”
Sean looks at the empty chair.
SEAN:
“It wasn’t for an elder.”
ELJARA:
“Apparently not.”
SEAN:
“Or a dead hero.”
ELJARA:
“No.”
SEAN:
“It was for someone still out in the rain.”
The woman enters.
Nobody announces her. Someone shifts a bench. Someone else moves a coat.
The older man puts the warm bowl in front of her.
She sits.
SEAN:
“She didn’t have to ask.”
ELJARA:
“For supper?”
SEAN:
“Whether there was still room for her.”
—
The woman listens to the storyteller for a moment.
Then she says something.
The room laughs harder than before.
ELJARA:
“Another witness.”
SEAN:
“His creature may not survive the evening.”
They watch her begin to eat.
Her shoulders gradually relax.
Then Eljara looks towards the rear door.
ELJARA:
“Now he’s outside.”
SEAN:
“The young man.”
ELJARA:
“Yes. They haven’t made the work disappear.”
SEAN:
“They’ve shared it.”
ELJARA:
“There’s a difference between taking turns and deciding the same person never needs to come inside.”
The older man fills another bowl and covers it beside the stove.
Sean nods towards it.
SEAN:
“He hasn’t forgotten him either.”
ELJARA:
“No.”
SEAN:
“So the empty place wasn’t a decoration.”
ELJARA:
“What was it?”
SEAN:
“A way of saying the gathering wasn’t complete just because everyone in the room was comfortable.”
Inside, the older man finally sits down.
The woman tears a piece from the loaf and passes it to him.
Sean smiles.
SEAN:
“And now somebody is feeding him.”
ELJARA:
“Yes.”
SEAN:
“That matters.”
ELJARA:
“It does.”
—
For a while, neither speaks.
Then Eljara rests her hands on the railing.
ELJARA:
“There’s still something we haven’t learned.”
SEAN:
“Of course there is.”
ELJARA:
“She was useful to them tonight.”
Sean waits.
ELJARA:
“Would they keep her place if she could never stand watch again?”
The laughter continues inside.
SEAN:
“We haven’t seen that evening.”
ELJARA:
“No.”
SEAN:
“But that’s the question to carry forward. Whether your place survives the end of your usefulness.”
She nods.
SEAN:
“Still, tonight she was cold. Somebody kept her food warm.”
ELJARA:
“That doesn’t answer everything.”
SEAN:
“It doesn’t have to answer everything to matter.”
Eljara looks back towards the woman.
ELJARA:
“No. It doesn’t.”
—
The rain begins to ease.
SEAN:
“I thought the important moment would be when they all became one.”
ELJARA:
“Did they?”
Sean studies the mismatched chairs, the interrupted storyteller and the bread changing hands.
SEAN:
“They can’t even agree on the size of a monster.”
ELJARA:
“A serious obstacle to cosmic unity.”
He laughs.
Then he looks towards the bowl beside the stove.
SEAN:
“But somebody knows who’s missing.”
ELJARA:
“And has done something about it.”
They turn towards us.
SEAN:
“When you say ‘we’—”
ELJARA:
“—who is already included before they arrive?”
SEAN:
“Whose absence do you notice?”
ELJARA:
“And whose place would you keep if they had nothing left to give?”
Inside, another hand reaches for the bread.
Someone is already passing it.
MYTHVEIL QUESTION
When your people gather, who is missing because they are making the gathering possible?
And would their place remain theirs if, one day, they could only receive?

MYTHVEIL NOTE
“The Empty Place” is an original Mythveil Chronicles scene within the classic/W20 framework of Werewolf: The Apocalypse. The meeting house, meal, reserved place and change of watch are invented details, not a published scenario or universal Garou customs.
The Moot Rite reference follows W20, not W5. The meal neither replaces that rite nor produces an equivalent supernatural effect. The connection between ritual, practical care and belonging is Mythveil’s philosophical interpretation. Sean and Eljara remain outside observers.
Our work is written with deep respect for the writers, designers, artists, developers and communities—from the original White Wolf era to those carrying the World of Darkness forward—whose creations make these questions possible.
