Pulp Cthulhu Noir August — The Good People

Eljara watches the crowd gathering outside the town hall.

Parents.

Veterans.

Workers.

Shopkeepers.

Neighbours.

People who help one another.

People who bring food when someone is ill.

People who search through the night when a child goes missing.

Eljara: I know.

Sean: You don’t sound reassured.

Eljara: I’m not.

Sheriff Walker steps onto the town-hall stairs.

Sheriff Walker: Nobody goes alone.

Nobody enters a house without permission.

We search the woods, the railway and the quarry.

Someone calls from the crowd:

“What about Harper?”

Murmurs spread.

Sheriff Walker: We’re looking for evidence.

Another voice:

“What more evidence do you need?”

Later, near the railway tracks, someone finds a torn piece of blue cloth.

Woman: The missing girl wore blue.

The sheriff examines it.

Sheriff Walker: Denim.

From a work jacket.

Someone whispers:

“Harper owns a blue work jacket.”

Sean closes his eyes.

Sean: So do half the men in town.

A man turns towards him.

Man: You defending him?

Suddenly everyone is looking at Sean.

Not at the tracks.

At him.

Sean: I’m defending a jacket.

Nobody laughs.

The search reaches the quarry.

Nothing.

No girl.

No monster.

No answers.

The crowd grows restless.

Father: Maybe we’re looking in the wrong place.

Sheriff Walker: Meaning?

Father: Maybe we should search houses.

Sheriff Walker: No warrants.

Father: A child is missing.

A pause.

Father: Do something.

That night, nobody officially decides to go to Harper’s house.

They simply begin walking.

One person.

Then another.

Then thirty.

Harper opens his door.

Harper: What is this?

Mrs Wheeler steps forward.

The woman who teaches Sunday school.

Who brings pies to sick neighbours.

Mrs Wheeler: We need to see your cellar.

Harper: No.

The crowd murmurs.

There it is.

Not proof.

But something fear can use as proof.

Father: If you’ve nothing to hide—

Eljara steps forward.

Eljara: What exactly do you expect to find?

Mrs Wheeler hesitates.

Mrs Wheeler: We don’t know.

Eljara: Then how will you recognise it?

Silence.

Eljara: What would convince you that he’s innocent?

Nobody answers.

Eljara: How many times does an innocent man have to prove there’s nothing in his cellar?

The crowd becomes quiet.

Later, Sean and Eljara sit outside the closed diner.

Sean: They’re good people.

Eljara: I know.

Sean: Then what happened tonight?

Eljara strikes a match.

Eljara: They became frightened.

Sean: That’s not enough.

Eljara: Isn’t it?

She watches the flame.

Sean: Cruel people do cruel things.

Eljara: Of course.

Sean: But these aren’t cruel people.

Eljara extinguishes the match.

Eljara: That’s why fear is so useful.

Sean: Useful?

She looks towards the sleeping town.

Eljara: Cruel people don’t need permission to be cruel.

A pause.

Eljara: Good people do.

Sean: And fear gives it to them.

Eljara: Exactly.

Beyond the final streetlight,

something moves in the woods.

Low.

Slow.

Unseen.

Nobody goes to investigate.

Tonight,

the town has already found its monster.

The most frightening witch hunts are not led by monsters.

They are led by ordinary people who become convinced that fear makes cruelty necessary.
