The British camp never truly slept.
Steam hissed.
Coal burned.
Engineers celebrated another successful machine.

Almost forgotten.
STACY:
“They both call it civilization.”
Caelwyn watched the two columns of smoke rise into the evening sky.
CAELWYN:
“They do.”
STACY:
“The Empire brings railways.”
“Hospitals.”
“Schools.”
“Science.”
“They’re helping people.”
Caelwyn nodded.
CAELWYN:
“They believe they are.”
A long silence settled between them.
Children laughed around the distant village fire.
A steam whistle answered from the British camp.
STACY:
“And the people beyond the trees?”
Caelwyn watched an elder place another piece of wood upon the ancient hearth.
CAELWYN:
“They keep stories alive.”
“They remember names.”
“They teach children.”
“They pass on songs no book has ever written.”
“They believe they are protecting civilization, too.”
Stacy looked from one fire…
to the other.
STACY:
“So who is right?”
Caelwyn slowly scooped a handful of ash from the British furnace.
Then another from the tribal fire.
He opened his hand.
The ashes looked exactly the same.
CAELWYN:
“Can you tell which is which?”
STACY:
“No.”
CAELWYN:
“Neither can history.”
The jungle became unnaturally quiet.
Even the insects had fallen silent.
STACY:
“Then why do civilizations always fight?”
Caelwyn watched both fires illuminate the same darkness.
CAELWYN:
“Because every empire believes…”
“…its own flame…”
“…is the sun.”
He looked into the forest.
His voice dropped to a whisper.
CAELWYN:
“And something older than history…”
“…has always waited…”
“…for one fire…”
“…to extinguish the other.”
