“They’ve built something beautiful.”
Caelwyn:
“They have.”
Stacy:
“Then why are we standing here?”
The old warrior rested his hand on the weathered stone.
Caelwyn:
“Because nobody else is.”
The wind moved through the abandoned grove.
Leaves covered the old offering stones.
No footprints.
No candles.
No prayers.
Stacy:
“People still worship Taal.”
Caelwyn:
“They remember his name.”
A pause.
Caelwyn:
“They’ve forgotten where they once listened to him.”
Silence.
The bells of the new temple echoed across the valley.
Confident.
Powerful.
Certain.
Stacy:
“Isn’t one faith stronger than many?”
Caelwyn:
“For a kingdom?”
He nodded.
Caelwyn:
“Perhaps.”
Stacy:
“And for the soul?”
For the first time…
Caelwyn hesitated.
Caelwyn:
“What happens when a child forgets its grandmother?”
Stacy:
“The grandmother is still alive.”
Caelwyn:
“Yes.”

“So what changes?”
Caelwyn looked toward the forgotten shrine.
Caelwyn:
“The relationship.”
The words lingered.
Stacy:
“So the old gods don’t disappear.”
Caelwyn:
“No.”
Stacy:
“We do.”
The old warrior smiled sadly.
Caelwyn:
“Now you’re beginning to understand.”
A raven landed upon the ancient stones.
Watching.
Waiting.
Stacy:
“The Elves hate seeing places like this.”
Caelwyn:
“They remember when this grove was sacred.”
Stacy:
“And the Dwarfs?”
Caelwyn:
“They remember why.”
The wind grew colder.
The temple bells rang again.
The old shrine remained silent.
Stacy:
“So this is how Chaos destroys the Old World.”
Caelwyn slowly shook his head.
Caelwyn:
“No.”
Stacy:
“No?”
He looked one last time at the abandoned stones.
Caelwyn:
“Chaos doesn’t destroy the old shrines.”
A long silence.
Caelwyn:
“It simply waits for us to forget why we built them.”
