An old woman sang alone.
Across the market square—
a young Tilean musician played a new melody.
The crowd applauded.
Nobody heard the old song anymore.
Eljara:
“He’s better.”
Sean:
“He is.”
Eljara:
“His music is more beautiful.”
Sean:
“Perhaps.”
The applause echoed through the square.
Coins filled the musician’s hat.
The old woman continued singing.
Only the wind listened.
Eljara:
“So progress wins.”
Sean:
“It often does.”
Eljara:
“Then why do you look sad?”
Sean watched the old woman reach the final verse.
Sean:
“Let me ask you something.”
Eljara:
“Go on.”
Sean:
“What was the last song your mother sang?”
Silence.
Eljara:
“…I don’t remember.”
Sean nodded gently.
Sean:
“Exactly.”
The answer lingered.
Eljara:
“So forgetting is the tragedy.”
Sean:
“No.”
Eljara:
“No?”
Sean:
“Choosing not to remember is.”
The bells of the Temple of Sigmar rang proudly across the town.
The old woman finished her song.
Nobody applauded.
Nobody even noticed she had stopped.
Eljara:
“But cultures change.”
Sean:
“They should.”
Eljara:
“So old songs must disappear.”
Sean slowly shook his head.
Sean:
“If a child learns a new language…”
A pause.
Sean:
“…must it forget the first?”
Silence.
Eljara:
“No.”
Sean:
“If a new temple is built…”
Another pause.
Sean:
“…must the old shrine be abandoned?”
Again she answered quietly.
Eljara:
“No.”
The marketplace celebrated the future.
The old melody disappeared into the summer wind.
Eljara:
“So this is how Chaos steals the past.”
Sean smiled sadly.
Sean:
“No.”
Eljara:
“Then how?”
Sean looked around the cheering crowd.
No hatred.
No cruelty.
Only excitement.
Sean:
“Chaos never needed to silence the old songs.”
A long silence.
Sean:
“It only needed us to stop singing them.”

Civilizations do not lose themselves when they create something new.
They lose themselves when they decide the old songs are no longer worth singing.
