The old sailor looked toward the harbor.
Merchant ships.

Each carried a different banner.
OLD SAILOR:
“A flag tells people who you are.”
He looked back at the black cloth.
A long silence followed.

“But it never tells them…”
“…who you’ll become.”
Mara frowned.
MARA:
“So the flag doesn’t make pirates?”
The old sailor slowly shook his head.
OLD SAILOR:
“No.”
“People do.”
Just then—
a single gust swept across the pier.
Every flag in the harbor unfurled.
The royal banners.
The merchant colors.
The fishing pennants.
Only the black flag remained perfectly still.

“Why didn’t it move?”
The old sailor looked toward the open sea.
