Stacy unfolded it.

Stacy:
“Another expedition.”

Caelwyn didn’t look up.

Caelwyn:
“Where?”

Stacy:
“Peru.”

She reached for another.

Stacy:
“And this one…”

“…Egypt.”

Another.

Stacy:
“China.”

She sighed.

Stacy:
“They’re calling them unrelated anomalies.”

Caelwyn smiled faintly.

Caelwyn:
“They’re calling them that because the alternative is worse.”

Stacy spread a world map across the table.

One by one she marked every report.

Then stopped.

Stacy:
“…No.”

Caelwyn finally walked over.

Caelwyn:
“What?”

She pointed silently.

Stonehenge.

Giza.

Newgrange.

Ancient mountain temples.

Standing stones.

Every report clustered around places people now called myths.

Stacy:
“Every civilization built sacred sites.”

Caelwyn slowly shook his head.

Caelwyn:
“I don’t think they were sacred.”

She frowned.

Stacy:
“Then what were they?”

A long silence.

Outside, the festival music suddenly stopped.

The birds rose from the forest all at once.

Thousands of them.

Neither of them looked away from the map.

Finally—

Caelwyn answered.

Caelwyn:
“I think they were infrastructure.”

The library trembled.

Dust drifted from the ceiling.

Somewhere beyond the valley—

something impossibly large bent the forest without ever revealing itself.

Stacy whispered:

Stacy:
“There has to be another solution.”

Caelwyn closed the ancient journal.

His voice was almost lost beneath the silence.

Caelwyn:
“I think humanity has been looking for one…”

He glanced toward the ancient hill.

“…for thousands of years.”
