WHEN THE CHILDREN SEE THEM FIRST Delta Green — Mythveil Chronicles June · The Summer King · Week 3

“There’s another one.”

Mara points toward a sunflower field beyond the festival.

Music drifts through the warm evening air.

Bonfires burn.

Children laugh.

The perfect summer night.

And standing among the flowers—

something watches.

Too tall.

Too thin.

Completely still.

The sunflowers bend around it.

Like water flowing around a stone.

“That’s the fourth one today.”

Chibi looks up.

“You can see all of them?”

Mara nods.

“Can’t you?”

Silence.

The crowd below keeps celebrating.

Nobody notices.

Nobody looks.

The thing in the field never moves.

Never blinks.

Never shifts.

Just watches.

“Why are they always staring at people?”

Chibi follows her gaze.

Then quietly answers:

“They aren’t watching people.”

Mara frowns.

“Yes they are.”

“No.”

The wind moves through the flowers.

The thing remains perfectly still.

Then Chibi says:

“They’re watching the border.”

Silence.

“What border?”

The festival continues.

The music grows louder.

The bonfires burn brighter.

Everything feels alive.

Everything feels normal.

And somehow that makes it worse.

Because the creatures belong to the brightness.

Not the shadows.

The brightness.

“People used to know where the world ended.”

Mara looks across the valley.

The river.

The fields.

The festival.

Everything looks real.

“Looks like it still does.”

For a moment,

Chibi almost smiles.

Then points toward the thing in the field.

“Ask it.”

Mara looks again.

And suddenly realizes something impossible.

The creature isn’t standing in the field.

The field is standing around it.

The flowers.

The grass.

The air.

Everything bends around the thing.

Like reality itself refuses to touch it.

Mara’s stomach twists.

Then the creature moves.

Only its head.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Toward her.

For one impossible second—

she sees its face.

Not eyes.

Not a mouth.

Only thousands of fragments of reflected sunlight

trying to imitate a human being.

The world seems to stop.

Then everything starts again.

The music.

The laughter.

The wind.

As if nothing happened.

Mara grabs Chibi’s sleeve.

“Did you see that?”

Chibi nods.

Slowly.

“Yes.”

“Why did it look at me?”

A long silence follows.

Then Chibi answers softly:

“Because you looked back.”

Below them,

the festival continues.

The fires burn.

The music plays.

The longest days of the year continue.

And scattered beyond the bonfires,

hidden in the sunlight itself,

the watchers keep their vigil.

Waiting.

Counting.

Remembering.

For something humanity forgot long ago.
