The volunteers arrived by the millions.
Workers became soldiers.
Farmers became crusaders.
Pilgrims became martyrs.
Nobody forced them.
That was the frightening part.
They wanted to go.
Stacy:
They’re answering.
The hololithic display filled with reports.
Regiments fighting beyond exhaustion.
Doctors working for weeks without rest.
Pilgrims volunteering for certain death.
Story after story.
Stacy:
They’re becoming extraordinary.
Long silence.
Caelwyn:
That’s what worries me.
She frowned.
Stacy:
You think they’re becoming fanatics.
Caelwyn:
Some are.
A pause.
Caelwyn:
Others are becoming saints.
Another.
Caelwyn:
The problem is that nobody can tell the difference yet.
Outside, mustering bells echoed across the city.
The sound of an empire preparing itself.
Stacy:
They’re inspired.
Caelwyn:
Yeah.
Stacy:
You make that sound dangerous.
Long silence.
Caelwyn:
Because it is.
The answer unsettled her.
Stacy:
Faith is dangerous?
Caelwyn:
No.
A pause.
Caelwyn:
Power is dangerous.
Another.
Caelwyn:
Especially when people think it belongs to them.
The storm beyond the viewport flashed gold.
Then darkness.
Then gold again.
As though something enormous moved behind the clouds.
Stacy:
You really think the Emperor is behind this?
Long pause.
Caelwyn:
I think something is.
The answer bothered her.
Because the miracles were real.
The courage was real.
The sacrifices were real.
People were becoming more than themselves.
Stacy:
What if they’re right?
Caelwyn looked at her.
Stacy:
What if this is him?
Silence.
Stacy:
What if they’re feeling the Emperor?
For the first time all evening—
that possibility frightened him.
Caelwyn:
Maybe they are.
Stacy:
Then why does that sound like bad news?
The storm flashed again.
Gold.
Beautiful.
Wrong.
Caelwyn:
Because people think corruption begins with weakness.
A pause.
Caelwyn:
It doesn’t.
The clouds flickered red.
Barely visible.
Caelwyn:
A warrior wants to protect.
Another.
Caelwyn:
Then he wants victory.
Another.
Caelwyn:
Then he wants blood.
The storm flickered blue.
Gone immediately.
Caelwyn:
A scholar wants truth.
A pause.
Caelwyn:
Then knowledge.
Another.
Caelwyn:
Then secrets.
Green light shimmered within the clouds.
Caelwyn:
A healer wants to save lives.
A pause.
Caelwyn:
Then all lives.
Another.
Caelwyn:
Then life itself.
Purple lightning flashed.
For a moment.
Nothing more.
Caelwyn:
A saint wants to love humanity.
The longest silence yet.
Caelwyn:
Then humanity isn’t enough.
Stacy stared at the horizon.
Finally understanding.
Not completely.
Enough.
Stacy:
The Emperor makes them greater.
Caelwyn:
Maybe.
A pause.
Stacy:
And Chaos twists that greatness.
For the first time all evening—
Caelwyn smiled.
Not because he was happy.
Because she almost understood.
Caelwyn:
No.
The answer hit harder than anything before it.
Stacy:
No?
Thunder rolled across the horizon.
Closer now.
Waiting.
Caelwyn:
Chaos doesn’t twist greatness.
A pause.
Caelwyn:
It asks one question.
Stacy:
Which is?
The sky burned.
Gold.
Red.
Blue.
Green.
Purple.
Then darkness.
And Caelwyn whispered:
Caelwyn:
How much more are you willing to become?
Outside—
the mustering bells continued ringing.
And across the Imperium—
humanity rose to meet its king.
Not realizing that something else had risen to meet them.
