THE CHILDREN OF THE LONGEST DAY Warhammer 40,000

The summer festival had survived longer than the world that created it.

Nobody remembered where it came from.

Nobody remembered why it mattered.

But every year the people gathered beneath the great solar towers.

Lanterns filled the sky.

Songs echoed through the streets.

Candles burned against the coming darkness.

For a few precious hours—

people smiled.

Mara watched hundreds of lanterns rise into the evening sky.

Tiny stars drifting upward.

Mara:
Do you think they know?

Chibi:
Know what?

She pointed toward the crowds.

The music.

The celebration.

Mara:
Why they’re doing this.

Silence.

Chibi:
Probably not.

Mara:
Then why do it?

A pause.

Chibi:
Because people remember things.

Another.

Chibi:
Even when they forget them.

The answer made no sense.

Which probably meant it was important.

The festival continued around them.

Workers.

Children.

Families.

Pilgrims.

People finding a reason to celebrate in a galaxy that rarely offered one.

Mara:
Do you think the Emperor will come back?

The question lingered.

Heavy.

Sacred.

Dangerous.

Chibi stared at the sky.

A very long time.

Finally—

Chibi:
I think people need him to.

Mara:
That’s not what I asked.

Chibi:
I know.

Silence.

The last light of the longest day painted the city gold.

For a moment the shrine world looked beautiful.

Not safe.

Not perfect.

Beautiful.

Chibi:
I don’t know if he’ll come back.

A pause.

Chibi:
I don’t know if Guilliman can fix everything.

Another.

Chibi:
I don’t know if the Lion can either.

Mara nodded.

Then Chibi looked toward the people below.

Toward the lanterns.

Toward the laughter.

Toward the tiny acts of hope that somehow survived ten thousand years of darkness.

Chibi:
I think we’ve been asking the wrong question.

Mara:
What question?

The final lantern climbed higher than all the others.

A tiny sun against the gathering night.

Chibi:
Everybody asks whether the king will return.

A pause.

Chibi:
Nobody asks what happens if he does.

Silence.

Mara:
What do you think happens?

Chibi watched the lantern drift upward.

Higher.

Higher.

Then he smiled.

Small.

Hopeful.

Real.

Chibi:
I think he’d be sad.

Mara:
Sad?

He nodded.

Chibi:
Not because everything is broken.

A pause.

Chibi:
Because some things aren’t.

The lantern disappeared into the stars.

The people below kept singing.

Kept laughing.

Kept hoping.

The sort of things entire empires are supposed to protect.

Mara:
Do you think that’s enough?

For the first time all evening—

Chibi’s smile grew.

Chibi:
Maybe that’s what the king comes back to find out.

And on the longest day of the year—

the light lingered a little longer before finally surrendering to the night.
