The streets were full.
Music.
Laughter.
The smell of food drifting through warm summer air.
Eljara watched people dancing beneath strings of lights.
“They look happy.”
Sean nodded.
“They are.”
A brass band exploded into another song.
The crowd cheered.
For a moment—
everyone seemed connected.
Nobody was rushing.
Nobody was looking at a clock.
Nobody was thinking about tomorrow.
Eljara smiled.
“Maybe summer really is different.”
Sean watched the golden sky above the city.
“It is.”
A pause.
“Then why does it feel strange?”
Sean pointed toward the setting sun.
“Because everybody celebrates the light.”
The sky burned gold.
Orange.
Red.
Beautiful.
“And nobody notices what comes next.”
Eljara looked at him.
“The dark?”
Sean shook his head.
“No.”
A longer pause.
“The cost.”
The music continued.
Children laughed.
The city glowed.
And for a moment Eljara finally understood.
Summer isn’t beautiful because it lasts.
Summer is beautiful because it doesn’t.
