The community garden was overflowing.
Flowers.
Vegetables.
Vines climbing every fence they could find.
Stacy looked up from her tablet.
“Why did people worship the sun?”
Caelwyn watched a bee disappear into a sunflower.
“Because it came back.”
“That’s it?”
He smiled.
“No.”
The afternoon light filtered through the oak trees above them.
Warm.
Golden.
Alive.
Stacy looked around.
Children helping in the garden.
Old people talking on benches.
Tomatoes growing where concrete once ruled.
“It can’t just be survival.”
Caelwyn nodded.
“It wasn’t.”
A pause.
“People didn’t worship the harvest.”
Stacy frowned.
“What did they worship?”
Caelwyn looked toward the horizon.
“The promise.”
Silence.
“The promise?”
“The belief that winter ends.”
A breeze moved through the leaves.
“The belief that life comes back.”
Another pause.
“The belief that tomorrow can be better than today.”
Stacy watched the garden again.
For a moment she understood.
Not the crops.
Not the food.
Hope.
That was what people prayed for.
Because hunger hurts.
Cold hurts.
Loss hurts.
But hopelessness destroys.
The sun hung high above New Orleans.
Ancient.
Reliable.
And Caelwyn smiled.
“Every civilization falls in love with summer before it learns what summer costs.”
