PAST THE POINT OF STOPPING Warhammer 30/40k

The warning posters were everywhere.

School corridors.

Transit stations.

Ration halls.

Factory entrances.

Most people stopped noticing them years ago.

Mara had only recently started looking.

That was the problem.

Once you start looking—

it becomes difficult to stop.

A giant Tyranid loomed across one wall.

Beneath it:

HUNGER WITHOUT END

A Necron warrior emerged from darkness.

DEATH DENIED

An Ork warlord.

WAR WITHOUT PURPOSE

A Tau commander.

UNITY WITHOUT CHOICE

An Eldar figure surrounded by impossible beauty.

DESIRE WITHOUT LIMIT

And finally—

a Drukhari archon smiling beneath a dark sky.

SURVIVAL WITHOUT MERCY

Mara:
Do you think they’re right?

Chibi looked up from a folded ration wrapper.

Chibi:
Mostly.

That wasn’t the answer she expected.

Mara:
Mostly?

He nodded.

Chibi:
They’re real dangers.

A pause.

Chibi:
They’re just not the whole story.

The hive continued moving around them.

Workers.

Children.

Shift changes.

Endless motion.

Mara:
What’s missing?

Chibi pointed toward the Tyranid mural.

Chibi:
Everyone says they consume worlds.

A beat.

Chibi:
Nobody talks about why hunger scares people.

Mara:
Because it kills you.

Chibi:
Yeah.

A pause.

Chibi:
Because everybody understands it.

Silence.

The Tyranid suddenly felt less alien.

Not friendly.

Just familiar.

They moved to the Necron display.

Chibi:
Everybody fears dying.

Mara nodded.

Chibi:
The Necrons just never stopped.

The Orks.

Chibi:
The war is the purpose.

The Tau.

Chibi:
Everybody likes belonging.

The Eldar.

Chibi:
Success without limits.

The Drukhari.

For the first time he hesitated.

Mara:
What?

He kept staring at the mural.

Chibi:
That’s the scary one.

Mara:
More than the Tyranids?

He nodded slowly.

Chibi:
Because everybody thinks they’d never become that.

Silence.

The posters towered above them.

The monsters.

The warnings.

The futures.

Mara:
What makes them different from us?

For once Chibi took a long time answering.

Finally—

Chibi:
I don’t think it starts with being different.

A pause.

Mara:
Then what?

He looked at the murals one final time.

The Tyranid.

The Necron.

The Ork.

The Tau.

The Eldar.

The Drukhari.

Different faces.

The same warning.

Chibi:
I think it starts when something important becomes more important than everything else.

Silence.

The posters no longer looked like monsters.

They looked like roads.

Roads beginning with:

  • hunger
  • fear
  • belonging
  • hope
  • success
  • survival

Roads that make perfect sense.

Until the point where nobody remembers how to stop.

And somehow—

that felt far more frightening than any monster in the galaxy.
