**Pulp Cthulhu Noir May — No One Was Outside**

Sean: They shut this place down months ago.
Eljara: Officially.
Morning fog covers the valley while an abandoned research complex looms beyond rusting fences and warning signs.
According to every report:
- closed
- evacuated
- decommissioned
Yet smoke still rises from the chimneys.
Freight trains still arrive.
Lights still glow behind laboratory windows.
Sean watches a black train disappear through security gates that should no longer be operating.
Sean: Somebody’s still running it.
Eljara: That’s the mistake.
The gates close behind the convoy.
The facility continues moving through its routines:
- deliveries processed
- forms exchanged
- elevators operating
- workers crossing catwalks
Everything functions normally.
Too normally.
Sean studies the valley through binoculars.
The workers don’t look frightened.
They don’t look controlled.
They don’t even look unusual.
They simply look busy.
Sean: This place was contaminated.
Eljara: So were they.
The answer hangs heavily in the cold air.
Fog drifts across the complex.
Somewhere inside, a loudspeaker crackles.
Immediately:
- routes change
- vehicles move
- schedules adjust
The entire facility responds as one.
Sean: Jesus.
Eljara: Yes.
Sean: It’s alive.
Eljara watches the valley below.
Eljara: No.
Sean: Then what am I looking at?
A freight convoy disappears into an underground tunnel.
Workers follow.
Paperwork changes hands.
Generators hum beneath the earth.
Eljara finally answers.
Eljara: People.
The realization hits harder than any experiment.
No hidden monster.
No secret mastermind.
No ancient horror beneath the facility.
Only ordinary people maintaining extraordinary systems.
Sean: The experiments didn’t create the machine.
Eljara: No.
Sean: They revealed it.
Fog slowly swallows the facility.
The buildings disappear.
The workers disappear.
The trains disappear.
But the sound remains:
- generators
- rail traffic
- stamped forms
- opening doors
The process continues.
Invisible.
Unquestioned.
Endless.
May does not end with a monster.
It ends with a mirror.
🜍 Month 5 · Pulp Cthulhu Noir
🜍 Week 4 — No One Was Outside
🜍 The machine was never separate from us
If you remember what this felt like —
you already know the sound.
The distant generators.
The train arriving on schedule.
The feeling that everyone was waiting for someone else to take responsibility.
Step back into it.
Or keep pretending the system belonged to somebody else.

Want to go deeper?
Then follow the rail lines into the fog.
Past the laboratories.
Past the containment fences.
Into the place where the machine stops looking like an institution—
and starts looking like us.
The dossiers are waiting.
The process never stopped.
