“The City That Cannot Slow Down” WFRPG / The Old World

Altdorf no longer sleeps.

Rain pours across overcrowded streets.

Music crashes through tavern windows.

Factories still thunder somewhere beyond the festival districts.

The city never becomes quiet anymore.

It only changes intensity.

Eljara:
“They don’t know how to stop anymore.”

Sean watches drunken workers force themselves through crowds already packed beyond comfort.

People laughing too hard.

Moving too fast.

Shouting over music that’s already too loud.

Sean:
“They’re afraid to.”

Silence settles briefly between fireworks.

For one second—

the streets almost become still.

Then someone starts another song immediately.

The crowd joins in with visible relief.

The city cannot tolerate silence anymore.

Because silence means awareness.

Awareness of exhaustion.

Of grief.

Of emptiness.

A knife game gathers screaming spectators near the market square.

Blood stains the mud beneath cheering crowds.

Nobody looks disturbed.

If anything—

the danger excites them more.

Eljara:
“A few years ago this would’ve terrified people.”

Rainwater runs from Sean’s beard as he watches the crowd surge around another near-accident with open fire.

Sean:
“Now it barely reaches them.”

That’s the horror.

Normal life no longer feels strong enough.

The city needs:
more noise
more danger
more spectacle
more intensity

just to feel something.

A drunken man wearing a laughing festival mask nearly collapses in the street.

Nobody stops.

The crowd simply moves around him.

Overstimulated.

Exhausted.

Emotionally starving.

Sean:
“You know what Slaanesh really understands?”

Another firework explodes overhead.

The crowd screams in delight.

Sean:
“Desperation.”

Not pleasure.

Desperation.

People searching for stronger feelings because ordinary life no longer reaches them.

The Empire taught people how to interrupt suffering.

Now interruption has become addiction.

A performer nearly burns himself during a street show.

The crowd cheers louder instead of backing away.

Eljara:
“They want it to go wrong.”

Sean watches the streets pulse with rain, music, and escalating hunger.

Sean:
“They need it to feel real.”

And somewhere beneath the noise,
beneath the taverns,
beneath the endless stimulation—

Altdorf no longer feels like a city celebrating life.

It feels like a civilization terrified of emotional silence.

Sigmar suffered for the Empire himself.

Later generations discovered it was easier to ask others to suffer in his place.
