WHEN FEAR STARTS SOUNDING REASONABLE Delta Green — Mythveil Chronicles Week 2 · May / The Machine

“You think they know?”

Sean watches the muted news broadcast above the diner counter.

Economic uncertainty.

Infrastructure concerns.

Public safety measures.

The captions scroll endlessly beneath smiling anchors.

STABILITY INITIATIVES EXPANDED ACROSS URBAN DISTRICTS

Eljara stirs her coffee slowly.

“They know enough.”

Outside, rain falls across glowing office towers and crowded streets still alive long after midnight.

The city keeps moving.

A tired customer nearby barely looks up from his laptop while eating.

Dark circles under his eyes.

Hands shaking slightly.

Still working.

“You know what scares me?” Eljara asks quietly.

Sean already knows.

“They’re relieved.”

Silence.

The television continues promising:

  • continuity
  • public order
  • collective responsibility
  • stability

No shouting.

No threats.

Just calm professional reassurance.

“Every new restriction,” Eljara says softly,

“every new system—”

“—makes them feel safer.”

The fluorescent lights hum overhead.

Soft.

Comforting.

A tired couple near the window speaks quietly.

“At least someone’s doing something.”

Eljara hears it.

And somehow that sentence feels worse than fear.

“That’s how it starts,” she says quietly.

“No.”

Sean takes a slow sip of coffee.

“That’s how it survives.”

Outside, another train rumbles beneath the street.

Deep.

Steady.

Reassuring.

The waitress increases the television volume slightly.

A government representative calmly explains new continuity measures.

No cruelty.

No anger.

Just exhausted professionalism trying to keep frightened people calm.

“They’re not lying,” Eljara says quietly.

“No.”

“That’s the worst part.”

The city outside continues glowing beneath rain and fluorescent light.

Hospitals operating.

Subways running.

Night shifts changing.

Civilization continuing because someone keeps making impossible compromises behind closed doors.

“What happens when people stop caring what the system costs?” Eljara asks softly.

Sean watches the clean reassuring graphics on the television.

Then:

“They don’t stop caring.”

A pause.

“They just start measuring cost differently.”

Silence.

Outside, commuters hurry beneath umbrellas toward the subway entrance.

Nobody looks happy.

But they do look relieved.

And somehow—

that feels worse.

Because monsters are easy.

But ordinary people accepting terrible compromises

because they want tomorrow to feel stable—

that feels real.
