The drawing is already there.
Mara stops.
“I didn’t draw that,” she says.
Chibi looks down.
The circle.
The path.
Perfect.
“You did,” he says.
“No.”
Silence.
“That’s the game,” Chibi says.
“No.”
“That’s how you made it.”
“No.”
Mara kneels slowly.
“They were different,” she says.
“How?”
“There were traps.”
“No.”
“There were choices.”
“No.”
The word lands flat.
Certain.
Mara looks at him.
“You remember that.”
“No.”
“You were here.”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“That’s how it always looked.”
The wind moves softly.
The lines don’t change.
Don’t shift.
They just—
exist.
Mara presses her hand into the sand.
The drawing doesn’t break.
“That’s not how sand works,” she whispers.
“Yes, it is.”
“No.”
Silence.
“You said it was easy,” Chibi says.
“I didn’t.”
“Yes, you did.”
“I said it was supposed to be.”
“That’s the same.”
“No.”
The wind dies.
Total stillness.
“If this is right,” Mara says,
“then what I remember is wrong.”
Chibi nods.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“And if I’m right?”
He looks at the drawing.
Perfect.
Finished.
Unchanged.
“Then why does it look like that?” he says.
Silence.
The waves move again.
The world continues.
Normal.
Correct.
Mara looks at him.
“You believe this.”
“Yes.”
“And not me.”
A pause.
“I believe what’s there,” he says.
The words stay.
Mara looks back at the drawing.
At the game that never changed.
Only she did.
