Sean:
Well, that’s a new one.
Eljara:
No.
Just old mischief in an Imperial font.
The false notice was already being corrected, but too late. For twelve minutes, clerks across the level had walked in silence with their left hands raised in acknowledgment of “filing purity.”
Sean:
Did they really do it?
Eljara:
Most of them.
Sean:
With the hand?
Eljara:
With the hand.
He almost laughed.
Sean:
That’s pathetic.
Eljara:
That’s administration.
They watched a junior scribe hurry away, pretending not to notice the smirks behind him.
Sean:
Who posted it?
Eljara:
No one knows.
Sean:
No one ever knows the first one.
Eljara looked at him.
Eljara:
The first one?
Sean:
The first lie in a room.
The one small enough to seem harmless.
A pause.
Eljara:
It was only a joke.
Sean:
Yeah.
Eljara:
You don’t sound convinced.
Sean:
I’m convinced it was a joke.
A beat.
Sean:
I’m not convinced that’s all it was.
Eljara looked back at the panel.
Eljara:
What did it test?
Sean:
Obedience first.
Eljara:
And after that?
Sean:
Whether anyone would check.
She nodded slightly.
Eljara:
Most didn’t.
Sean:
Because authority has a shape.
That one stayed with her.
Eljara:
A shape.
Sean pointed at the screen.
Sean:
Official lettering.
Correct phrasing.
Proper seal placement.
Enough structure, and people stop reading for truth.
They read for familiarity.
Eljara:
That’s uglier than a prank.
Sean:
Most useful things are.
They watched a clerk nearly turn left into the wrong alcove out of lingering habit.
Eljara:
Twelve minutes.
Sean:
That’s all it takes.
Eljara:
For what?
Sean:
For a habit to begin.
The correction notice flashed across the annunciator.
Eljara read it twice.
Sean noticed.
Sean:
You checked the seal.
Eljara:
Of course I did.
Sean:
You didn’t before.
She frowned.
Eljara:
Before it was absurd.
Sean:
Absurdity is half the trick.
Eljara:
How?
Sean:
If it’s too plausible, people get angry.
If it’s too ridiculous, they ignore it.
But if it’s just ridiculous enough to make them hesitate—
Eljara:
—they participate.
Sean:
Yeah.
A long silence.
Eljara:
So what is this really?
Sean looked down the corridor.
Sean:
Calibration.
Eljara:
Of what?
Sean:
Trust.
Reflex.
Threshold.
How far you can move a room before it notices it has moved.
The vox clicked alive again:
ATTENTION: DUE TO TEMPORARY SANCTITY REALIGNMENT, ALL SCRIBES ASSIGNED TO ARCHIVE TIER B ARE TO ADDRESS EACH OTHER AS “MOST REVERENT FILE-BEARER” UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
Somewhere unseen, people laughed.
Eljara closed her eyes briefly.
Eljara:
Again.
Sean started walking.
Sean:
Yeah.
Eljara:
Still funny?
He glanced back once.
Sean:
That’s the problem.
A beat.
Sean:
It is.
