Pulp Cthulhu Noir April — The Small Door

Chibi: They said it was just a prank.

Mara: Yes.

The alley is quieter now. The crowd is gone. The chalk circle inside the warehouse is already smudging under rain.

Only the secondary door remains.

Barely visible.

Chibi nudges a broken chalk piece with his shoe.

Chibi: It looked real.

Mara: It was meant to.

He looks toward the warehouse.

Chibi: The boys were laughing.

Mara: Yes.

Chibi: The men in coats weren’t.

Mara: No.

A puddle reflects the window above them. The reflection bends slightly where the water ripples.

Chibi crouches.

Chibi: When we play “don’t step on the line,” it’s pretend.

Mara: Yes.

Chibi: But if someone moves the line while you’re not looking—

He trails off.

Mara: Then it’s not the same game.

A pause.

Chibi: They said something almost came through.

Mara: Almost is useful.

Chibi: Why?

Mara: Because almost makes you doubt what you saw.

He stands slowly.

Chibi: So the big circle was fake.

Mara: Yes.

Chibi: But something else wasn’t.

She glances toward the darker end of the alley.

Mara: Yes.

Chibi follows her gaze.

Chibi: The small door.

Mara: Maybe.

Rain taps softly on metal somewhere above.

Chibi: So they made a loud door so nobody would see the quiet one.

Mara: Yes.

Chibi nods.

Chibi: That’s clever.

Mara: It is.

Chibi: Is that what April is?

Mara: Sometimes.

He thinks.

Chibi: In school, someone shouts “April Fool!” and everyone laughs.

Mara: Yes.

Chibi: But this doesn’t feel funny.

Mara: No.

Chibi: It feels like someone’s watching who looks where.

She nods.

Chibi: When you pretend to trip so someone looks at you, and then you take their marble—

Mara: Yes.

Chibi: The trick isn’t the fall.

Mara: No.

Chibi: It’s where everyone looks.

Silence.

Chibi: The system does that too, doesn’t it?

Mara doesn’t correct him.

Mara: Yes.

Chibi: Makes big noises so you miss the small ones.

Mara: Yes.

Chibi: Gives you three answers so you stop asking for a fourth.

Mara: Yes.

Rain runs along the alley gutter.

Chibi: Then who’s the fool?

Mara considers carefully.

Mara: The one who thinks the first door is the only door.

Chibi looks at the secondary entrance again.

Chibi: It’s still there.

Mara: Yes.

Chibi: Even when no one looks.

Mara: Especially then.

They turn and walk away.

Behind them, the chalk dissolves completely.

The false door fades.

The small one remains.

Quiet.

Patient.

Waiting for someone who understands the rules of the game.
