Sean:
“We could’ve taken the shot.”

Eljara:
“No.”

Sean:
“We had angle. Distance wasn’t perfect, but—”

Eljara:
“It wouldn’t have changed anything.”

Sean watches the clearing.

“They didn’t even hesitate.”

Eljara:
“They don’t anymore.”

Sean:
“That’s not normal.”

Eljara:
“No.”

Pause.

“That’s stable.”

Sean exhales slowly.

“They knew.”

Eljara nods.

“Yes.”

“They always do.”

Below—

the circle reforms.

Sean shakes his head.

“That’s the part I don’t like.”

Eljara:
“It’s not supposed to be liked.”

Sean:
“No… I mean—”

He gestures slightly.

“They don’t question it.”

Eljara:
“They did.”

Sean looks at her.

“When?”

Eljara:
“Before it worked.”

Silence.

Sean looks back down.

“They’ll do it again.”

Eljara:
“Yes.”

Sean:
“And again.”

Eljara:
“Yes.”

A long pause.

Sean’s voice drops.

“And if they stop?”

Eljara doesn’t answer immediately.

Then, quietly:

“It stops.”

Sean frowns.

“What stops?”

Eljara looks at him.

“Everything.”

Silence.

Sean nods slowly.

“Yeah,” he says.

“I was afraid of that.”
