The jungle does not sleep.
It never did.
It breathes.
Slow.
Heavy.
Endless.
Leaves shift above them.
Not from wind.
From something moving through time the same way it always has.
Caelwyn stands still.
One hand resting lightly against the bark of an old tree.
Feeling it.
Not touching.
Stacy is beside him.
Notebook in hand.
Closed.
She is not writing.
“There’s a pattern,” she says quietly.
Caelwyn does not answer.
Below them—
the clearing.
It is not hidden.
It was never meant to be.
Open space carved into the jungle.
Deliberate.
Maintained.
Used.
Figures move inside it.
Slow.
Measured.
No rush.
No fear.
“They’ve done this before,” Stacy says.
“Yes.”
“How many times?”
Caelwyn watches the ground, not the people.
The ground.
“Enough,” he says.
A pause.
Stacy exhales.
“That’s not an answer.”
“It is.”
She looks down again.
A man is brought forward.
He walks.
Not forced.
Guided.
“Consent?” she asks.
Caelwyn tilts his head slightly.
“Acceptance.”
“That’s not the same thing.”
“No.”
The man kneels.
The others step back.
Spacing.
Distance.
Order.
Stacy studies it.
Not emotionally.
Structurally.
“They’re recreating something,” she says.
“No.”
A beat.
“They’re continuing it.”
Stacy’s grip tightens slightly around the notebook.
She doesn’t open it.
“Greece,” she says.
Caelwyn says nothing.
“Persephone.”
Her voice stays level.
Controlled.
“She goes below.”
“Yes.”
“So something can return above.”
“Yes.”
Stacy watches the people in the clearing adjust their positions.
Not randomly.
Not intuitively.
Precisely.
“Seasonal transfer,” she continues.
“Life… for absence.”
Caelwyn nods once.
“Balance.”
“No,” Stacy says.
She watches the center.
“Not balance.”
A pause.
“Requirement.”
Caelwyn does not argue.
The jungle shifts.
A long branch creaks somewhere behind them.
Unseen.
Unimportant.
Stacy continues.
“Celtic traditions.”
“Green Man.”
“Growth figure.”
She swallows.
“Always associated with return.”
Caelwyn’s voice is quiet.
“And disappearance.”
Stacy nods.
“Yes.”
“He is not reborn,” Caelwyn says.
“He is replaced.”
Below—
the man does not move.
The blade is brought forward.
Still.
Waiting.
Timing.
Stacy’s voice drops.
“Christianity.”
Caelwyn exhales slowly.
“Yes.”
“The cross.”
A pause.
“No death…”
She doesn’t finish.
Caelwyn does.
“No salvation.”
Silence.
The jungle seems to listen.
The blade falls.
Clean.
Not violent.
Final.
The sound is soft.
Too soft.
Stacy closes her eyes.
Not in shock.
Not in grief.
In recognition.
“That’s consistent,” she says quietly.
Caelwyn nods.
“Yes.”
“No deviation.”
“No.”
Below—
movement resumes immediately.
The body is moved.
Not carried.
Handled.
Placed.
Prepared.
The ritual does not end.
It continues.
“That’s the part that matters,” Stacy says.
“Yes.”
“It doesn’t stop.”
“No.”
She looks at him.
“This isn’t an event.”
“No.”
“It’s a function.”
“Yes.”
The jungle breathes.
Heavy.
Unbroken.
Stacy looks back down.
“They think they’re performing it.”
Caelwyn shakes his head slightly.
“No.”
“They’re maintaining it.”
A long silence.
The clearing resets.
The circle reforms.
Positions return.
Ready.
Again.
Stacy’s voice is barely there now.
“How far back?”
Caelwyn looks past the clearing.
Into the trees.
Through them.
“As far as it needs to be,” he says.
“That’s not a number.”
“No.”
“It’s a condition.”
She nods slowly.
“Yes.”
A long pause.
Then—
quietly:
“It never stopped.”
Caelwyn’s voice is almost gentle.
“No.”
“It was never broken.”
The jungle breathes again.
Unchanged.

Some things return.
Some things take.
And some things
