**Pulp Cthulhu Noir The First Thaw — What Stays**

Chibi: It stopped.
Mara: No.
The lot looked normal again.
No movement.
No ridges.
No shifting lines beneath the mud.
Just wet ground settling under quiet streetlight.
Chibi: Then why isn’t it moving?
Mara: Because it doesn’t need to.
He frowned.
Chibi: That’s worse.
She didn’t argue.
Behind them, the men were gone. No cables. No machines. No signs anything had happened.
Just absence.
Chibi pulled the spiral stone from his pocket.
Still warm.
Chibi: It didn’t stop.
Mara: No.
Chibi: It just…
Mara: …settled.
A pause.
Chibi: Is it everywhere?
Mara: Yes.
Chibi: Even where nothing happens?
Mara: Especially there.
He looked down at the ground again.
Flat.
Still.
Wrong.
Chibi: Can we leave?
Mara shook her head gently.
Mara: We were never outside.
The city moved around them.
Cars. People. Light.
Nothing broken.
Nothing wrong.
Except now—
they understood what held it together.
