Stacy: Yes.

Caelwyn: That’s not reassuring.

Stacy: No.

The city looked normal again.

That was the problem.

No flooded basements.
No broken pavement.
No visible movement.

Just wet streets drying under steady light.

Stacy laid the maps across the desk.

Different years.
Different layouts.

Same district.

Caelwyn: These don’t match.

Stacy: Look closer.

He did.

The streets hadn’t just changed.

They had aligned.

Not randomly.

Not logically.

But consistently.

Caelwyn: That’s not reconstruction.

Stacy: No.

Caelwyn: That’s adjustment.

She placed the diagram beside the maps.

The same branching structure.

The same curves.

The same pattern they had seen in the ground.

Caelwyn: It’s the same.

Stacy: Yes.

A pause.

Caelwyn: The city isn’t built over it.

Stacy: No.

Caelwyn: It’s built with it.

She didn’t correct him.

She didn’t need to.

Caelwyn: The war didn’t bury it.

Stacy: No.

Caelwyn: It exposed it.

Stacy: Yes.

He looked back toward the window.

The street was calm.

Too calm.

Caelwyn: And the closures?

Stacy: Not containment.

Caelwyn: Then what?

She closed the notebook.

Stacy: Maintenance.

The word settled into place.

Clean.

Final.

Caelwyn: The movement…

Stacy: Wasn’t it coming up.

Caelwyn: No.

Stacy: It was reconnecting.

A long silence.

Caelwyn: Does it spread?

Stacy: No.

Caelwyn: Does it grow?

Stacy: Not like that.

He looked down at the map one last time.

Caelwyn: Then what does it do?

She followed his gaze.

Stacy: It connects.

Outside, the city moved like it always had.

Cars.

People.

Light.

Nothing broken.

Nothing wrong.

Except now—

they understood what it was built on.
